418. Rioja. Dec 27, 2002. Anders Lidén

1. 1999 Conde de Valdemar Crianza. 79 SEK
Derk medium-red. Medium nose, ripe fruit, plums, some oakraisins, burned rubber. Medium full, good acidity, soft tannins, strawberries, cherries. Short aftertaste.(13p)

2. Viña Alberdi Reserva. La Rioja Alta. 99 SEK
Medium red. Fine, quite oaky bouquet with red currants, and cherries. Medium full, well balanced, elegant taste, raspberries and oak. Delicious. (15p)

3. 1997 Allende. 140 SEK
Dark red. Big, fruity nose, dark berries and toasted oak. Full, quite tanninc, plenty of dark berries and a long aftertaste (15p)

4. 1995 Conde de Valdemar Gran Reserva. 178 SEK
Dark medium-red. Quite young, rich fruit-oaky nose. Raisiny, almost port-like. Full, oaky, fruity taste. Well balanced, but a bit closed.(14p)

Comments: Interesting to see how different these wines were in style. Viña Alberdi was a classic exeample of Rioja, from one of the best Bodegas, almost burgundian in style. I liked it a lot, some of the others liked it less. The Allende was a different wine in a modern fruit-driven style, while the Conde de Valdemars appeared somewhere in between. The Tempranillo grape is like a chameleon, it can appear in so different shapes (like the Chardonnay!).

414. Oct 25, 2002. 1997 Chianti Classicos. Lars Jonsson

1. 1997 Terreno Riserva. 126 SEK

4. 1997 Carpineto Riserva. 144 SEK
Dark medium-red. Medium bouquet. Medium full, good aromatic fruit, high acidity, tannic. (14p)

Summary: We had some difficulties in identifying these wines. (as we had on a previous tasting of Chiantis, #375, Jan 2001!!).They were obviously of high quality and quite similar in style but the rich, sweet, fruity taste was slightly atypical to us. The Terreno was best to drink now, while the Fonterutoli could develop a bit if the oak is adsorbed. I have a questionmark on the volatile acid though. Perhaps the Berardenga will win in the long run, it kept so well in the glass through the evening. As always with Italian wines, they were excellent with food, and my scores may be a bit low. Lars Jonsson and I have tasted the Terreno on several occasions before and there seem to be some bottle variations.
413. Oct 4, 2002. Primitivo di Puglia. Björn Aksell

1. 2000 Canaletto Primitivo. Casa Girelli. 69 SEK
Dark red, red rim. Young fruity, spicy nose, dark berries, some oak. Full, rich taste, a bit unpolished sweet fruit, blackberries. Good aftertaste. (14p)

2. 2001 Allegro Primitivo. Mondo del Vino. 60 SEK
Dark red. Young fruity nose, meat and dark berries. Medium full, soft, sweet fruit. Nice, fruity aftertaste. (13,5p)

3. 2001 A Mano Primitivo. Fusione. 72 SEK
Dark red. Powerful, young, fruity, aromatic nose. Cocos, fudge, oak. Full, soft fruit, well balanced and a nice aftertaste. (14p)

4. 2001 Promessa Primitivo. Fusione. 64 SEK
Dark red. Powerful, fruity, young nose, tight, a bit metallic. Medium full, slightly metallic taste, good acidity but a bit disjoint, fruity flavours. (13p)

5. 2001 Chunky Red. Mondo del Vino 60 SEK
Dark red. Medium nose, good fruit, dark berries and some toasted oak. Full taste with sweet fruit, nice balance. (14p)

Comments: A nice selection of wines, which were very similar in style, especially on the nose. The Canaletto was liked best by the majority of the tasters, but they did all represent an excellent quality/price ratio. They were of course not very complex wines but possessed nice, fruity flavours and good structure. No wonder why wines of this kind sell so well in Sweden these days.
412. Sept 20, 2002. St Julien, Bordeaux. Håkan Olsson.

1. 1988 Leoville Barton. 147 SEK in 1991
Dark red, slight brick-red rim. Fine, well-developed, rich bouquet with cassis and some oak. Full, fruity taste, a bit unpolished high acidity and lots of tannins. Good aftertaste. (15,5p)

2. 1989 Leoville Barton. 188 SEK in 1991
Dark red, brick-red rim. Medium bouquet, a bit shy but develops in the glass. Full, rich sweet fruity taste with black currants and blueberries, pleasant acidity and soft tannins. Long aftertaste. (16p, but if the bouquet develops another 1-2pts more?)

3. 1990 Leoville Barton. 140 SEK in 1991, en primeur
Dark red, slight brick-red rim. Medium bouquet, raisins and well integrated oak. Full, rich taste, good fruit and well balanced. Very good, but doesn't sing (yet?) So (16p)

4. 1989 Clos du Marquis. (2nd of Leoville Lascases). 145 SEK in 1992
Very dark red. Medium bouquet, with some cellarfeeling, but opens up a bit. Full, mature taste, lots of acidity and tannins, a bit dry aftertaste. Lots of everything but a bit raw and unpolished and beginning to loose fruit. (15p)

5. 1990 Clos du Marquis. (2nd of Leoville Lascases). 109 SEK in 1993
Dark red. Very fine, rich harmonic bouquet, lovely fruit and nice oak. Full, well structured taste with black currants, oak and a long aftertaste. At its top now(17p)

Comments: A tasting of Bordeaux really brings us back to our own backyard, and these wines were of course highly appreciated by the members of this group. The big surprise was that a 2nd wine could outperform a 2 Cru Classé! Actually, we were slightly disappointed by the Leoville Barton, especially the 1990 which Parker has rated 94! But let's be optimistic and hope that it will develop further. There were no signs of tiredness and as I have a few bottles in my cellar it will be interesting to follow them over the next few years.
We had the 1990 Clos du Marquis a year ago when it also did extremely well
With the meal 1990 Canon Fronsac (Mouiex) and 1990 Moulin Rouge, Haut-Médoc, were served. Both were absolutely delicious.
411. Aug 30, 2002. 14 - 15 %, Not for the Faint-hearted. Olof Persson

1. 1998 Cape Mentelle Shiraz. Margaret River. Western Australia. 14,5%. 169 SEK
Very dark red, almost opaque. Massive bouquet, powerful young fruit and oak. Full, meaty fruity taste, fine tannins and good acidity. Not easily identified as Shiraz or an Australian, but a very tasty wine. Well balanced, long aftertaste. Still young. (17p)

2. 1998 Allesverloren Tinta Barocca. Swartkranz. Republic of South Africa. 14,5%. 94 SEK.
Dark red. Medium nose, warm, fruit but some volatile acidity and ethyl acetate. Full, balanced taste, oak and a long aftertaste. Tasted better than it smelled, but was a lot better when I tried a bottle a month ago. Must retaste it. (13p??)

3. 1998 Domaine de Beaurenard. Châteauneuf-du-Pape. 14% (159 SEK, July 00)
Dark red, brick-red rim. Fine fruity smell with plums and spices. Full, with lots of sweet, spicy fruit. Good acidity and very tannic, slightly bitter aftertaste. Nice with food. Rated 90p by Parker and 93p by Wine Spectator (16p)

4. 2000 Zinfandel Old Wines. Masseria Don Nicola. IGT Terra di Salento. 15%. (84 SEK, Sept 01 in Denmark)
Dark purple red. Fine, fruity nose, raisins, oriental spices and mint. Full, rich fruity taste, liquorice with high, refreshing acidity and a good aftertaste. A bargain!! (16p+)

5. 1998 Palliser Estate Pinot Noir. Martinborough. 14%. (144 SEK, Sept -00 i Danmark)
Dark medium red. Big, almost perfumed, oaky nose. Medium full, quite fruity but may be in danger of drying out. High acidity and lots of oak in the aftertaste (15p)

Comments: I was time to find a different theme for a tasting. To be qualified for this tasting a wine should contain at least 14% alcohol. So I searched my cellar and found these. No feeble Cabernets here!! Actually, the theme was easily identified by Mr Jirle, but it was quite tricky to identify the wines.
410. Aug 9, 2002. Cannonau di Sardegna. Hans Eriksson

1. 2002 Le Bombarde. Cantine di Santa Maria la Palma in Alghero. (37 SEK)
Medium-red. Medium nose, vanilla, mint, cherries and black currant. Medium full, soft, minty, fruity taste, good acidity. Short aftertaste.(12p)

2. 2000 Sella & Mosca (40 SEK)
Pale medium-red. Medium nose with young fruit and vanilla. Medium full, good acidity, some fruit, red berries. Short aftertaste (11p)

3. 1998 Jerzu Antichi Poderi. Società Coop. Vitiv. di Jerzu. (53 SEK)
Dark red. Full, quite tannic, good minty fruit and nice balance(13p)

4. 1998 Tanca-Farra. Tenuta Sella & Mosca. (71 SEK)
Medium-red. Good fruit on the nose, dark berries and oak. Full, spicy taste, aromatic with mint, acidity and tannins in balance. Nice aftertaste. (14p)

5. 1997 Le Ghiaie. Meloni Vini, Selargius. (55 SEK)
Dark medium-red. Medium, quite oaky nose but also some fruit. Fullish, slightly burned taste, with oak and tannins. Almonds and dark berries. Warm, quite long almost portish aftertaste. A bit controversial (14p)

Comments: It was an interesting tasting of some pleasant wines with nice price tags. Cannonau is generally believed to be identical to Grenache. Other grapes are also permitted, and there were some Cabernet Sauvignon in at least the last two wines. All wines were purchased on Sardinia during a holiday trip but wine #3 is currently available in Sweden for 69 SEK.
409. July 26, 2002. Minervois. CG Dahl.

1. nv Reserve du Vigneron. Les Grands Chais Montaigne. 56 SEK
Medium red, pale orange rim, unclear. Medium nose, red currant and cherries. Medium full, high acidity, some simple straightforward fruit, short aftertaste (9p)

3. 1999 Ch Roquecourbe. 89 SEK
Dark red. Fine bouquet with good fruity black currants, dill and oak. Full, quite tannic, nice fruit and a nice, oaky aftertaste. Well balanced. 90% Syrah and 10% Grenache. (15p)

4. 1997 Ch Long-Gautie. 74 SEK
Medium red, mature rim. Medium bouquet, still fruity, spicy and some oak. Red and black berries - strawberries and cherries, almost a touch of Pinot Noir! Good fruity taste, nice acidity, spicy fruit and a pleasant aftertaste (14p)

5. 1998 Abbotts Cumulus Nimbus. 174 SEK
Dark red. Big, oaky nose. Massive, oaky wine, tannic but good fruit underneath. Long oaky aftertaste. Too oaky for my taste but the other guys liked it well. Might develop. The wine is made from 100% Syrah which indeed was well hidden under thick layers of oak. (15p??)

Comments: Pretty well made wines at good prices. I think they should be more careful with the use of oak though.
Two extra wines were served: 1999 Ch Pech-Latte from Corbières (83 SEK) which was nice with lots of garrigue character. The 2000 Milenage VdP d´Oc (Duboef, 70 SEK was less inspiring and the bottle has an awful design.

With the food: 2000 Vila Santa. João Portugal Ramos. 99 SEK
Lovely, rich, still very young wine. Great potential and good value.

Comments: As always, Periquita does well in our tastings. No one can accuse it of being complex, but it is a very well made wine for a good price. It was interesting compare it with the "Classico" which is a more of a old style Portuguese wine with plenty of wood.
403. March 15, 2002. California Zinfandels + Pinot Noir. Håkan Olsson

Very dark red, with lots of pigments in the brownish rim. At fist a bit tight bouquet which opened up. Dark berries, spices, plums, liquorice, and raisins - complex. Very full taste, good acidity and tannins, intense fruit and a long aftertaste. Very good now, but with a potential to develop further (18p+)

4. Ch La Lagune. 3. Cru Classé. Haut Médoc. 94 SEK in Nov 1984 (179 SEK)
Dark red, lots of pigments, maturing rim. Fine, rich Cabernet fruit, very ripe, portish nose with oak. Full, tannic taste and high acidity which demands food, pure open fruit and a pleasant aftertaste (16p)

Comments: What a lovely vintage 1982 was. We were all amazed how well these wines performed. They had a lot in common, yet slightly different styles. Lovely colour, still very red and only some brown in the rim. The bouquets were well developed, which means that the varietal characters were not so obvious. On the palate they had good structure, soft tannins and good acidity. My scorings reflects the opinions of the tasters very well. Prices were quite good then, even if compensated for the inflation.
