With regard to signal cables, there are many physical parameters which are
in effect including inductance, capacitance, DC resistance, skin effect,
dielectric materials, RFI, magnetostriction, reflections, oscillator
networks, rectification caused by impurities and more. However, not all that
we can hear can be explained by physical measurements but we must respect
those data which we can and do measure in addition to listening tests. With
the amount of variables, the topic of cables is complex but choice of cable
becomes a lot easier if the working conditions are taken into account.
There is no perfect cable but under specific circumstances certain parameters
can be prioritized. Due to the high input impedances of amplifiers, cable
capacitance is more audibly influencing than inductance.
On the other hand, loudspeaker cables which are seeing impedances of
4 - 16 ohm, inductance becomes a more important factor. It is also important
that a speaker cable has a low resistance in order to maintain the amplifiers
damping factor and not to produce frequency response changes caused by
variations in the loudspeakers Z curve. Considering dielectric absorption,
Teflon is one of the better isolation materials but air is the best.
We at Audiolive prefer interconnects which utilize air as dielectric in
that the conductor is almost freely suspended in air by the aid of a Teflon
spiral loosely spun around an inner conductor. This type of coax-cable has
also low capacitance, large bandwidth and good shielding. It works very well
as an interconnect and is sonicaly very neutral.
Good sounding speaker cables is another important item which can be produced
at a very low cost. We braid Teflon isolated cables in the same configuration
as telephone wires were made more than 50 years ago. The special braiding
geometry results in very low inductance since no conductors are ever parallel
to each other and are at 90º angles where they cross and are closest to
each other.
Audiolive is interested in achieving ultra-fidelity and based upon basic
physics, common sense and listening tests, these are the cables
we use ourselves and can supply to others.
In comparison, we do not hear any advantage of
using super-expensive hype cables of the voodooistic category.
