German Counter Offensive in Hungary Mars 1945

GERMANY MARCH 1945
The Russian Red Army is steadily closing in on the Eastern front and the Allied armies are advancing rapidly through the southern parts of Germany while the cities are being completely devastated by intense Allied bombing. German soldiers are pushed back and have now to fight for their survival on their native soil.

Hitler's last attempt to bring Germany back into winning the war by splitting the bondbetween the allied forces in the Ardennes Offensive some month earlier, had failed catastrophic. The bond between the Allied powers might not have been strong, but they were definitely unified in one goal – destroying the German regime. Now with few forces left to defend "Das Reich", the German army could not prolong the inevitable. Germanys final defeat is only weeks away.

Instead of doing the most obvious thing, proclaiming unconditional surrender to all german troops, that would save thousands of soldiers and civilians, Hitler had other plans. Something must be done to slow the Allied advance and give the germans another breath hold. He soon came up with a plan to do this. The idea was to launch a counterattack to recapture the oil fields near Lake Balaton in Hungary.

Such idea in the light of the situation are almost impossible to understand.  How entusiastisc were the soldiers about the jumping onboard their Tigers tanks and head
south, without air support and insufficient warfare logistics? What were the expected result when the regime already were breathing its last breath?"
