This is a shot from underneath the coordinate table.
The gold aluminum profile is from mounting hardwood floor and houses the encoder strip. The cable leads to the encoder which is a little elctronic gizmo that can read lines off of a very accurately printed ruler and through the use of electronics and software it can "translate" this into actual measurements that a human bean can read off of a PC screen for example.
