America started.During the years of 1840 - 1850 3,917 persons emigrated to the US from Sweden. At the end of the mass emigration around 1920 1,4 million swedes had emigrated to the US. The population of Sweden at that time was 3,5 million inhabitants. Thus more than every fourth Swede emigrated. About 200,000 emigrants sooner or later returned to Sweden with American ideas. |
