The system configuration utility can be accessed when simultaneously press the CTRL, ALT, and S keys.

<CTRL-ALT-S> to enter System Configuration Utility

The above message only lasts few seconds during initial boot up.

If you miss it, the computer will access its boot process.

You must reboot the system and try again within the time limit if you like to enter the System Configuration Utility.

5. HOW DO I ENABLE THE EXTERNAL 256K CACHE?

  1. Invoke the system configuration (CMOS setup)
  2. From the EXIT menu bar load the default settting
  3. Save and Reboot the machine

6. SETUP WINDOWS 95 FROM CD-ROM

  1. Place the Windows 95 Setup Boot Disk into the floppy Drive and turn on the computer.
  2. Choose "Configure unallocated disk space (recommended).",
  3. and choose Enable Large Disk Support. After rebooting, the hard drive will be formatted automatically.
  4. After hard drive is formatted, load the CD-ROM driver from CD-ROM installation disk by typing "install" from drive A.
  5. Reboot the machine to activate the CD-ROM drive.
  6. Run "setup" from your CD-ROM drive.
  7. For Setup Options, select Portable. For Product Identification number,

  11. Then choose Next to start copying files.
  12. After Setup finishes copying files, click on Finish to reboot the computer.

BATTERY QUESTIONS

1. TRAINING BATTERY; WHY BATTERY ONLY LAST VERY SHORT TIME?

Operation instructions for NiMH Rechargeable battery:

  1. Always fully charge your battery when first received, generally about 3 hours.
  2. When you charge your battery for the first time,
  3. your notebook computer may indicate that the charging is completed after just 10 to 15 minutes.
  4. This is normal and can happen with all rechargeable batteries when first charged.
  5. Simply remove the battery and let it cool down outside the notebook and then repeat the charging procedure.
  6. Upon first use, or after prolonged period of storage,
  7. you may need to charge and discharge your battery two or three times before obtaining optimum performance.
  8. It is best to charge the battery at room temperature ranging between 15 degree C and 30 degree C.
  9. It is normal for the battery to become warm during charging or after use.
  10. Your notebook computer may temporary stop recharge battery if the temperature of the battery or computer is too hot.
  11. It is not necessary to fully discharge your battery before recharging. You can top-off the charge at any time.
  12. A charged battery will gradually lose its charge if left in storage.
  13. We therefore suggest that you top-off the charge before use.

The second battery comes designed, in addition to the system's internal one,

to prolong the battery life for the unit's portable use.

For the second battery option, you need to use the secondary battery housing that came with each machine

and inserted into the floppy disk bay by removing the floppy drive first.

5. WHAT IS A DR-36 COMPATIABLE BATTERY?

You may replace the internal battery with a Duracell DR-36 battery,

available at retail outlets around the world. Duracell DR-36

available also in smart battery to accurate indicate a fuel gauge of the predicted available charge for the present state information.

TOUCHPAD QUESTIONS

1. INSTALLING TRACKPAD DRIVERS FOR WINDOWS 95.

  • Make sure windows 95 is fully loaded.
  • From "Control Panel" / "Mouse", click on "General" and "Change"
  • From Select Device, click on Have Disk
  • Either use Browser to type in the path "d:\driver\touchpad\Synaptic" and choose the trackpad driver.

EXTERNAL PORT QUESTIONS

1. HOW DO I USE AN EXTERNAL MOUSE?

If you are trying to use an external serial mouse connected to COM1

on the back of the notebook you need to disable the PS/2 trackpad mouse

by uncheck the "Enable Pointing Device" from the CMOS setup.

If you are trying to use an external PS/2 mouse connected to the PS/2 port you don't need to change anything besides connecting it.

Your external PS/2 mouse should work together with your internal trackpad.

2. HOW DO I USE AN EXTERNAL KEYBOARD?

Use the PS/2 to keyboard converter cable connect your keyboard to one side

of the cable and connect the other side of the cable to the external keyboard port on the notebook.

3. WHAT IS A SIR PORT?

The system's wireless communications capability is available using infrared as a transmission medium.

The system adopts Hewlett-Packard's Serial Infrared (SIR) technology as the interface for simple,

fast and convenient data exchange from the notebook computer to another, or to an IrDA-compatible device,

such as hand-held computers or IrDA printers.

You will need to enable COM2 port from the CMOS setup, where the system's infrared is integrated.

Usually, your IrDA-compatible devices should come with their own drivers.

Consult with your IrDA-compatible devices manufacture for information on installation.

If you are running WINDOWS 95 you might need to download updated driver from MICROSOFT home page.

Warning: No object should be blocked in each other's line of sight between the Notebook Computer and the infrared-equipped device.

4. HOW DO I USE AN EXTERNAL JOYSTICK?

Joystick or MIDI device such as a MIDI instrument or keyboard can be connected to the midi port on the back of the notebook directly.

SCREEN / RESOLUTION QUESTIONS

1. INSTALLING VIDEO DRIVERS FOR WINDOWS 95.

  • Go into "Control Panel" / "Display" / "Setting" / "Advanced Properties"
  • On the screen for Adapter, Click on Change. Insert the Multimedia Series CD into the drive, and select Have Disk.
  • Use Browser to point to d:\driver\video\95drv-e. Select Trident 9660/9680/938X, Linear Accelerator for PCI (v3.02.01)
  • Click on the Monitor tab, and click on change. Select Laptop Display 800*600. Click on Close to return to the Setting Screen.
  • Move the Desktop Area slider right to 800*600, and check the box for show setting icon on task bar
  • Then, click on Apply. Restart windows when prompted.

2. WHAT RESOLUTION & COLOR DOES NOTEBOOK SUPPORT UPTO?

  • Internal LCD display support up to 800*600*True Color (24bit)
  • External CRT display support up to 1280*1024*256.

4. HOW DO I SWITCH DISPLAY FROM LCD & CRT?

To switch the display from LCD to CRT to both, press the Fn + F6 keys simultaneously.

5. I CAN NOT GET RESOLUTION ABOVE 800*600 ON MY EXTERNAL MONITOR?

To display resolution above 800*600 on external monitor you have to disable the LCD display.

6. HOW TO ADJUST CONTRAST AND BRIGHTNESS ON LCD SCREEN?

  • To adjust contrast press the Fn + F7 keys simultaneously to turn it down and Fn + F8 keys simultaneously to turn it up.
  • To adjust brightness press the Fn + F9 keys simultaneously to turn it down and Fn + F10 keys simultaneously to turn it up.

7. WHY I CAN NOT ADJUST CONTRAST AND BRIGHTNESS ON MY ACTIVE COLOR SCREEN?

To users who are using the active color (TFT) color screen in which it is an optimize active matrix LCD, there is no need to adjust the contrast and brightness control. Normally the contrast and brightness on a TFT color screen is preset by the LCD manufacture. Contrast and brightness keys only works on a Dual Scan or Monochrome LCD screen.

8. HOW DO I GET FULL SCREEN ON LCD DISPLAY UNDER DOS AND WINDOWS?

If you wish to display full screen under DOS or 640*480 resolution under WINDOWS make sure you check the "VIDEO EXPANSION ENABLE" under CMOS setup.

9. MY LCD DISPLAY LOOKS TERRIBLE UNDER WINDOWS?

The LCD screen on SUPRA LECTUS is a 800*600 resolution screen, therefore, you have to select 800 * 600 resolution on your video display setup under windows. Under 640*480 resolution your windows characters will be displayed using expanded mode, therefore, the characters might look a little odd.

MPEG QUESTIONS

1. INSTALLING SOFTWARE MPEG DRIVER FOR WINDOWS 3.1 OR WINDOWS 95

You may install any software MPEG drivers that are available to you. We do not provide any software MPEG drivers. You can try to download the MPEG drivers from the World Wide Web.

2. THERE IS NO MPEG PICTURE ON THE SCREEN

If no picture is displayed on the screen but you can here the sound. Please make sure your video display is set to 256 colors.

TV-OUT PORT QUESTIONS

1. HOW TO DISPLAY ONTO A TV

  • Connect a RCA cable from the TV port on the back of the notebook to TV video input or VCR video input.
  • Switch you TV to either video or Channel 3 or 4 (depends on your TV setting)
  • From Control Panel double click on "Display".
  • Click on "Television" and make sure under feature you select "Underscan" and "Interlace". Moreover, Click on Advance button and select the Flicker reduction to "Best". Click OK to continue.
  • Click on "Display Device" and click on "TV" under devices. Make sure your TV standard is set correctly to either PAL or NTSC. Usually in North America and South America the standard is NTSC and in Europe and Asia the standard is PAL. Moreover make sure the TV resolution is set to 640*480.
  • To switch to TV, click on the TV under display or press Fn & F6 keys simultaneously until you see the image on TV.

2. I DON'T SEE ANYTHING ON MY TV

  • Make sure all cables are attached properly and the power is on to all devices.
  • Make sure the TV standard is set properly to either NTSC or PAL. Check the S1 switch underneath the keyboard as followed:
  NTSC PAL

S1-3 ON OFF
S1-4 OFF ON

3. MY TV PICTURE ROLLS BADLY IN DOS

You need to adjust the refresh rate to 60Hz using the video utility diskette that came with your system.

4. MY TV PICUTER LOOKS COMPLETELY CORRUPTED

Make sure you are running only a 640x480 resolution.

5. I SEE NO PICTURE ON THE TV, THOUGH I DO ON MY MONITOR

If all the cables are correctly connected, perhaps you have not selected the external video source on the TV. Video In does not pass through the channel turner, so if your TV is on channel 3 or 4, you need to select the video source. Check your TV or its remote for a Video, Line, Input Select, Source, or similar button. If you have video line in jacks, there is some way to select them, so look carefully. The same applies to your VCR, if you have connected through such a device. In this case, though, the TV should be set to match the output of the VCR, and it is the video source on the VCR that must be selected.

6. MY TV DOESN'T HAVE VIDEO JACKS

Use a VCR with video jacks, and output to your TV on coaxial cable, or else purchase a good RF modulator to convert from composite to coaxial cable.

7. THE CABLES CONNECTION ARE CORRECT AND MY TV IS ON VIDEO, BUT I STILL GET NO OUTPUT FROM MY NOTEBOOK COMPUTER

You need to toggle between LCD screen (only), CRT (external monitor only), both, or TV out by pressing Fn + F6 keys simultaneously.

8. THE EDGES OF MY SCREEN ARE MISSING

This is an intentional design feature of almost every modern TV. Rather than set the electronics to fit the screen precisely to the mask painted on your CRT, and unlike computer monitors, most TV designs just overscan the edges of the picture outside the visible area of the screen. Your best solution is to design your presentations with empty space around the edges. If you use windows, you can also set your presentations to display in a less-than-full-screen windows.

9. MY PICUTRE HAS SNOW, NOISE, OR INTERFERENCE

You may be using your notebook in an excessively noisy environment; try avoid using nearby electrical motors, halogen lights, etc.

AUDIO QUESTIONS

1. INSTALLING ESS1788 AUDIO DRIVERS FOR DOS/WINDOWS 3.XX.

  1. Start Windows 3.xx.
  2. Place the Utility CD inside the CD-ROM drive.
  3. From program manager, choose RUN from the File menu and type "d:\driver\audio\31drv\setup". Follow the instructions given.
  4. For first time installation, choose install the driver first and then install the software.

2. INSTALLING AUDIO DRIVERS FOR WINDOWS 95.

  • Go into "Control Panel" / "System" / "Device Manager" / "Sound, Video, and Game Controllers"
  • Double Click on ESS ES1688 AudioDrive.
  • Choose Drivers and click on Change Driver. Click Have Disk.
  • Either use Browser or type in the path "d:\driver\audio\95drv. Select ESS 1788 Plug and Play AudioDrive. Click on Finished.
  • Restart windows when prompted.
  • After windows has restarted, run "d:\driver\audio\95rack\setup" for installing audio applications.

3. NO AUDIO SOUND?

  1. Make sure the internal audio chip is enable in the CMOS setup.
  2. Check make sure all drivers are properly install and there are no IRQ conflict. Generally, make sure no PCMCIA cards (i.e. fax/modem, network cards, etc.) are using the same IRQ as the audio IRQ. Reinstall the drivers if necessary.
  3. Check if the volume is turn up by pressing Alt & F12 keys simultaneously.

PCMCIA QUESTIONS

1. INSTALLING CARDWIZ PCMCIA DRIVERS FOR DOS/WINDOWS 3.XX.

  1. Insert the Utility CD into the CD-ROM drive
  2. From Windows run "d:\driver\cardwiz\english\setup".
  3. When ask number of sockets enter two.
  4. CardWiz PCMCIA should automatically detect any available COM port and IRQ setting for your PCMCIA cards. For more information about CARDWIZ PCMCIA drivers please refer to the README file under your PCMCIA utility diskette.

2. INSTALLING PCMCIA DRIVERS FOR WINDOWS 95.

  • From "Control Panel" / "System" / "Device Manager", remove "Other devices" which is marked by a yellow question mark.
  • From Control Panel / Add New Hardware, click "Next". When Windows prompt to ask to search for your new hardware choose "NO" then click on "Next"
  • Under Add New Hardware Wizard, choose "PCMCIA socket" then click "Next"
  • Place the utilities CD into the CD-ROM drive, then click "Have Disk".
  • Either use Browser or type in the path "D:\driver\pcmcia\w95omega" and choose OMEGA PCMCIA socket. Then click "OK"
  • Reboot your computer to validate the installation.
  • During Rebooting, windows 95 will find two new hardware (PCMCIA bridge), windows 95 will prompt you to insert the Utility CD and windows 95 CD twice.
  • After the OMEGA PCMCIA driver is successfully installed, from Control Panel / System /PCMCIA socket, you should find 2 OMEGA MICRO PCI TO PCMCIA BRIDGE devices.

3. WHAT IS A ZOOMED VIDEO (ZV) PORT?

The Notebook Computer includes the expansion slots for a variety of PC Cards.

  • Type III x 1 (equivalent to Type II x 2) on the right panel.
    • Slot 0 located on the lower socket.

Slot 0 supports the Zoomed Video (ZV) port, a direct connection between a PC card and a VGA controller. It allows the PC card to write video data directly to an input port of the system's VGA controller, for live video capture and playback for example.

  • Slot 1 located on the upper socket.
  • Type II x 1 on the left panel.

4. INSTALLING VPM DRIVER FOR THE ZOOMED VIDEO PORT

  • Go to Control Panel/Add New Hardware. Do not allow Windows to search for the new Hardware.
  • Choose Sound, Video, and Game Controllers as the hardware type, then click on Have Disk.
  • Either use Browser or type in the path d:\driver\video\vpm\win95.
  • You will see a Select Device screen with 4 different Trident Devices. Select the Capture item, and click on OK. Then Click on Finish. Some files will be copies from the CD-ROM. Do not start windows yet.
  • Repeat for all four devices listed. After all four devices have been installed, restart windows.

POWER MANAGEMENT QUESTIONS

1. WHY DOES MY SCREEN KEEP BLANKING OUT?

My screen display keep blanking out and I need to hit a key to get back everytime is because the power management automatically shuts off the screen after certain time when no input is detected. To avoid this problem you can either disable the power management from the CMOS BIOS setup or change the timing for screen sleep.

2. THE DURATION OF BATTERY LOW WARNING IS TOO LONG.

The duration of battery low warning is designed base on the following factors:

1. The specification of the battery itself. Different battery manufacturer has their own different definition of the during of battery low.

2. To fit for most users' system configuration in general. The more complicated system configuration you got, the less duration of battery low warning it will be:

Concerning to fulfill these factors mentioned above, that's why we defined the duration of battery low warning as it is now. To be honestly, it is quiet hard to meet everybody's need.

3. SUSPEND / RESUME BUTTON DOES NOT WORK

Make sure your power management is enable in the CMOS SETUP.

4. WHY PRESSING FN+F5 DOESN'T SHOW THE BATTERY LEVEL GAUGE.

Fn + F5 only works for smart battery.

5. HOW TO USE SUSPEND HARD DRIVE (HIBERNATION) FEATURE

  1. Boot up from a bootable DOS Disk
  2. Insert the disk labeled CD-ROM Installation Driver & Suspend Utility in the floppy drive.
  3. From A:\, type 0vmakfil -pXX, where XX is at least the amount of system memory installed.
  4. After partition is created, reboot the system.
  5. Make sure your suspend mode is set to suspend to disk under CMOS setup.

6. HOW DO I INSTALL APM UNDER DOS, WINDOWS 3.XX, AND WINDOWS 95

The Notebook utilizes ADVANCED POWER MANAGEMENT (APM) to decrease CPU temperature, thus increases battery operating time.

TO INSTALL APM IN DOS

To decrease CPU temperature and increase battery life, you must load DOS driver POWER.EXE in CONFIG.SYS

DEVICE=C:\DOS\POWER.EXE

This driver will monitor CPU usage in both DOS and WINDOWS. For detailed information, please refer to DOS help regarding POWER.EXE

TO INSTALL APM ICON IN WINDOWS 3.XX

When you install Windows please use CUSTOMER SETUP instead of EXPRESS SETUP, this will allow you to add APM icon in the Control Panel Box. Within the setup menu, you need to change the COMPUTER field to MS-DOS system with APM. This will add APM icon to the CONTORL PANEL BOX.

If you have already used WINDOWS and wish to have APM icon in the CONTROL PANEL BOX. All you need to do is start windows setup again and run the above mentioned procedure.

BATTERY LEVEL IN APM icon will be support only if the smart battery is used.

TO INSTALL APM IN WINDOWS 95

Enter Control Panel for system icon, select Device Manager menu for CD-ROM setting. Keep Auto Insert Notification disable from the system repeatedly scanning the IDE port.

When Advanced Power Management enabled, the notebook system power will be automatically turned off with no need to press the power button when you shut down windows 95.

BATTERY LEVEL IN APM icon will be support only if the smart battery is used.

OTHER OPERATING SYSTEM COMPATIABILITY QUESTIONS

1. NOTEBOOK RUNNING UNDER WINDOWS NT 3.51

  • Video support upto 800*600*16.7M on LCD and 1280*1024*256 on External monitor.. Please install the NT3.5 driver from the utility CD from directory "d:\driver\video\nt35-e". Follow the instruction given on readme file.
  • CD-ROM tested OK
  • Internal Audio tested OK. Driver can be found on the Utility CD from directory "d:\driver\audio\nt35drv"
  • PCMCIA controller tested OK. Please make sure your PCMCIA cards are listed under WINDOWS NT 3.51 compatibility list. For modem users, please disable IRDA port (COM2) from CMOS set up and make sure your card is inserted before WINDOWS NT 3.51 starts.
  • Currently there are no NT drivers for MPEG/VIDEO CAPTURE MODULE.

2. SUPRA LECTUS RUNNING UNDER WINDOWS NT 4.0

  • Video support upto 800*600 on LCD.
  • CD-ROM tested OK
  • Internal Audio tested OK. From Control Panel, click on Multimedia / Device / Add, choose Unlisted or updated driver. Driver can be found on the Utility CD from directory "d:\driver\audio\nt40drv" or from the windows NT4.0 CD from directory "d:\drvlib\audio\ess\1386". Choose I/O address at 240 and IRQ at 5.
  • PCMCIA controller tested OK. Please make sure your PCMCIA cards are listed under WINDOWS NT 4.0 compatibility list. For modem users, please disable IRDA port (COM2) from CMOS set up and make sure your card is inserted before WINDOWS NT 4.0 starts.
  • Currently there are no NT drivers for MPEG/VIDEO CAPTURE MODULE.

3. SUPRA LECTUS RUNNING UNDER OS/2 VER 3.0

  • Video support upto 800*600*16.7M on LCD and 1280*1024*256 on External monitor.. Please install the OS/2 Warp 3 VGA driver diskette. Follow the instruction given on readme file.
  • CD-ROM tested OK.
  • Internal Audio tested OK. Please run the install from the Utility CD under directory d:\driver\audio\os2drv". Follow the Release note for installation instruction.
  • PCMCIA controller tested OK Please choose model Packard Bell under PCMCIA list and make sure your PCMCIA cards are listed under OS/2 WARP compatibility list.
  • Currently there are no OS/2 drivers for MPEG/VIDEO CAPTURE MODULE.

  • Please make sure you are running version 5.0 of SCO UNIX. Only version 5.0 supports enchanced IDE controller.
