DAVID HOLMES:
Bow Down At The Exit Sign
(GoBeat Records)

My long time favorite David Holmes has just released a surprisingly disappointing new album called Bow Down To The Exit Sign. It has got good reviews everywhere - but in my view the album comes out so boring that I hardly can believe it.

It comes with only one decent track, and that is the single 69 Police otherwise it is just barren music with no edge whatsoever. The musical expression is very much like Primal Scream´s, also hugely disappointing, Xterminator album released earlier this year. And Bobby Gillespie is making a cameo on two songs on Holmes´s album. Makes sense in an odd way.

What are these guys up to? Too much chemicals, or what? Both Bow Down To The Exit Sign and Xterminator sounds more or less like angry and frustrated white boys making a point of being angry. Like, "God damn, I am so pissed off, let’s record the vocals on red levels so it sounds like I am screaming. It will be like Rock and Roll!" They seem to think that when the music is loud enough, no one can hear you scream. Holmes seems to believe that he can rock´n roll - he can't, even though the music on his former albums truly music rocks. But why bother? Rock music died five years ago and if Holmes thinks he can produce anything decent from a buried dinosaur that will be his loss.

Not that I care that much, after all, it is only music and I have already sold off the albums to the second hand store. Sad it is, nevertheless, since I had expected so much more from both Primal Scream and David Holmes, I have been a dedicated and long time fan of their music for quite some time now, but on these albums their musical journey suddenly parted from mine. Temporally I hope.
