The Original Soundtrack for Ang Lee´s film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is painfully beautiful. As is the movie. Essential listening and viewing.
PHOTEK:
Mine To Give - David Morales Face Down Mix
(Science 12")
Mine To Give featuring Robert Owens on vocals is taken from Photek´s album Solaris. Mine To Give is a great tune in its original mix - and so is this. But Morales has almost doubled its lenght, added a deep bassline for the dancefloor and yet left the vocal parts almost intact. The outcome is a long progressive pulse of bass and beats and it might be one of the best records of the year - already in February! Essential!
NEXT EVIDENCE:
The Body Theme
(Ibadan Recordings 12")
Some of you might already know that I have a thing for the music of the French combo Next Evidence. Elsewhere have I described Next Evidence´s music as a journey, exploring influences and adding snippets of inspiration to their global music. They have turned to both Africa and Brazil for inspiration without loosing the deep house dance appeal.
Next Evidence´s new jam off New York´s Ibadan records comes with a Brazilian touch. It is more than a touch of Brazil this time though, since The Body Theme isn´t built on a steady 4/4 beat which is the usual framework for dance music in Europe. Rather, Next Evidence has aimed at the rhythmic complexity of native Brazilian music and added the power of live horns, percussion and scat vocals and the result is a steaming samba-house smoker full of promises for a velvet night. Powerful and one of the best samba-house records ever made outside Brazil.
ANTONIO:
Rizmo Puro - Pure Rhythm
(Tribal Winds 12")
Unexpected raw and hard beats from Antonio on Rizmo Puro. The main mix is the one to go for at peak hours. Great for beat mixing. But I prefer to drop the fickle moody mix late night
ANTONIO:
Volume 3 Fenix Fantasy
(Tribal Winds 12")
Fenix Fantasy is the second record in the double release from Antonio´s own imprint Tribal Winds on the 28th of February 2001.
Fenix Fantasy is a Brazilian tinged stormer which rocked the floor the other night.
Scat vocals from an unknown chanteuse, nice guitar licks, horn blasts and keys. Funky stuff.
It comes in three excellent re-mixes with different flavors for every occasion. Wicked!
AQUANOTE:
True Love
(Naked Music 12")
You´ll be humming this tune in the grocery store, in the bank and when you are waiting for the bus. You gotta have it!
THUNDERBALL:
Pop The Trunk
(Eighteenth Street Lounge Music 12")
This is lounge music, just as the label suggests. Thunderball delivers four dubby jams on this record. The set opens with the funky beat mix of Pop The Trunk. The Thievery Corporation Mix adds a little bit of jazz. The serene Siroco has a wicked bass-line. I like it a lot.
ELISHA LaVERNE:
You Are The One
(King Street Sounds 12")
As usual from King Street Sounds there are four different flava´s on the vinyl. The Da 12 remix should probably be considered as the original mix and it is a straight forward dance tune with lots of soul. Made to please the floor. Happy music in every respect!
On flip side is The Masterpiece:the Flipped Dub, deep, dubby and soulful music for listening pleasure and dance floor mayhem. Essential!
