NOW PLAYING - OCTOBER

ALEXANDER KOWALSKI:
a1. Progress |b1. Along |b2. Progress - Diego Remix
(EFA Promo 12")

Two dance floor bombs from the man with the rollin' basslines - Alexander Kowalski. These are not included on his debut album Echoes. The main mix of Progress grooves nicely. Diego's remix adds perspective to the title Progress since Diego has de-constructed the groove and added a touch of breakbeat to the mix. Very cool.

NISSAN:
New York City Nights | Uplifting Blues
(Alola 12")

Straight out of Israel comes this dance floor monster! Eli Nissan comes across as a master producer and song writer on this set. New York City Nights starts out with a saxophone, playing a short phrase, accompanied by a sleazy wah-wah guitar, then comes the percussion and finally: the bass-line and the groove is released, the feets starts thumping and soon you will find yourself dancing like crazy to the wild saxophone. This is a real night mover and it will fit almost anywhere in the mix.

Uplifting Blues on flip side, is close to nu-jazz with a hovering electric piano, slap bass and slow beats.

This is a truly awesome set. Do not sleep!

STREET CORNER SYMPHONY:
Memories Of Aphrodite
(Session 12")

A deep disco house anthem for the discerning floors with analoge synth stabs, percussion and disco glamourama. Nice one mate!

ERNEST SAINT LAURENT:
Clumsy Lobster
(Bugged Out 12")

Clumsy Lobster was a monster on selected floors in London this past summer. DJ Harvey removed bits and and pieces and came up with a dub remix to die for on Harvey's Weekender Remix. But it is the smashing disco-house remix of Harvey's Quiet Storm Remix that does it for me. Excellent stuff!

BROOKS:
Clix || MaxPax
(Mantis 12")

Ninteen year old teen prodigy Brooks has been DJ'ing and producing since he was 15. The Clix EP off Mantis Records has been well received from house and techno heads alike. The original remix is a nine minutes long jazzy house stormer with a dash of Latin beats.

On flip side is the sparse and minimalistic Reclose remix. The set closes with MaxPax which will be a future chill out classic. A friend of mine claimed that this record put him to sleep. For me, it is an outstanding set of music. Judge for yourself.

LE MANS:
Mi Novela Autobiográfica
(Groove Attack 12")

The now defunct band Le Mans originated from San Sebastian in Spain. Despite that Le Mans split up as a band in 1998 they are still making heads nod and feets move. Due to the longterm quality of their music, this track, Mi Novela Autobiográfica, has become a lounge- classic in Germany.

Mi Novela Autobiográfica is one of Le Mans' most popular songs and it is taken from their last album Aqui Vivia yo. It is the rare instrumental version that is included in this set. The instrumental take of Mi Novela Autobiográfica had previously appeared only on the flipside of a vinyl seven inch single, released by the Elefant imprint in Spain.

The vocal version of Mi Novela Autobiográfica has been included on several German compilations. The most noteworthy compilation is the Folky: Acoustic Music In Digital Times off the SpectrumWorks imprint which was released in May 2001.

Kabuki picked Mi Novela Autobiográfica, initially attracted by the spooky organ, for a remix. What evolved from the serene sounds of Mi Novela Autobiográfica can only be described as a tearin' NuJazz / Broken Techno-Remix which is already getting airplay by the German / West-London jazz-mafia. Broken Techno - a very good record!

CIRCULATION:
Turquose
(hooj 12")

Superb tech-house from Circulation. The formula is familiar by now: a strong bass-line, a driving bass-drum and slamming beats. Nothing more to it really - just beats and a bass-line! A superb floor filler.

JAH RULE:
Rhythm & Sound w/Tikiman
(Basic Channel 10")

Dub-reggae techno with a twist. Deep, slow, beautiful and then some. Do not sleep on this magic 10", or anything from Rhythm & Sound for that matter. Everything off that label is worth a listening, but this record and the Cornel Campbell set released in May has got it all. Go and get it if you are into deep, dubby house-tech. Awesome!

SOUL PATROL:
Love EP 1
(InfraCom! 12")

Jazzy house beats in four different flavors. Love Variations pt.1 (Charlie's Dark Reconstruction) has an ever so small dash of Gamelan music in the repetitive percussion patterns that meanders through the song. Release Your Mind (Fellman + Louise Mix) built on a fast beat brings to mind the German combo Art Konik's strange nu-jazz. Well worth a look.
