Space: Above and Beyond

It´s a pity, because this series could´ve been really great. It had a fun premise, a good, if not great cast, nice sfx and costumes, and an enormous amount of clichés, but unfortunatly the plots themselves always seemed to lack something vital to get them running. It´s odd because the scripts themselves weren´t that bad either. It all just failed to mesh, I guess. No synergy. The story is one we've seen a countless times, mankind is attacked without warning or provocation by a race of hostile aliens who prove terrifyingly unstoppable until our heroes arrive on the scene. The choice of the shows heroes are almost excruciatingly politically correct and standardised, we have one white lead character, male of course, who's good looks, short hair and all-american values makes him the natural leader of the others, who include a token black woman who's kind and compassionate unless provoked, an asian-american who's smart, a white woman with a dark, disturbing, secret, and one other white man with a wild streak, naturally with longer hair to show that he's dangerous. Our heroes are all future-version high school graduatees who enlists to defend their homeworld and the american way. Their mentor is an older, white haired, man who was once an ace himself but who has been grounded and promoted because of injuries sustained in the fighting. He's hard but fair, seems rough but has a heart of gold, his age and experience tempers the others fiery youth and blah blah blah. So basically the story and casting is so cliché-ridden as to collapse under it's own weight, but it has redeeming values in seeming to recognise these clichés and parodying itself.
