Basic facts:
Communicating devices as used in security systems can be divided into the following categories based on :
Tape dialler:
The oldest form of communicator was based on the old 8-band cassete player. A recorded voice message was transmitted to the Garda Siochana: "Garda, Garda, Garda.....Alarm activation at the house of Mr Jones, etc, etc"
These devices can no longer be used to report an alarm activation instead the alarm report must be sent to an Alarm Monitoring Centre where in turn it is passed on to the Gardai.
Digital Voice message transmitter:
This communicating device transmits a pre-recorded voice message to a list of standard telephone numbers pre-programmed by the alarm installer. It is normally used to contact family members or neighbours who can come and check your house......

Digital message transmitter:
Known in the trade as a "digi", this device is a separate unit installed by the alarm installer as part of the initial system or is added at a later stage. Special digital signals can be transmitted over a standard telephone line to a recieving unit housed in an Alarm Monitoring Centre. These signals are generated by the alarm system detecting an activation from:
---a smoke detector
---door/window magnetic contact and/or shock detector
---a panic button
---a movement detector, etc

The Alarm Monitoring Centre on receipt of these digital signals would then inform the proper authorities/emergency services, ie Garda Siochana, Fire service, Ambulance service.
Note: This is the normal type of communications system as used in alarm systems today.

Upload/Download communicators:
With the latest advance in communication techniques it is now possible for the alarm installation company to carry out remote programming of an alarm system by using an Upload/Download communicator. Unfortunately these devices are either part & parcel of the control panel or are designed to connect to a certain manufacturer's control panel(s).

Some Upload/Download communicators have special features which allow the Alarm Monitoring Centre to listen-in or have a 2-way conversation with the person(s) in the house. These features can play a very important role in situations where the alarm activation should be verified ie with the listen-in feature the intruder can be heard moving around the house. In a medical alert situation, the Alarm Monitoring personal can communicate directly with the injured person, determine exactly what the problem is and inform the proper emergency service.
