X-10 PLC Technology was developed between 1976 and 1978 by engineers at Pico Electronics Ltd. in Glenrothes, Scotland, a subsidiary of X-10 Ltd. Pico engineers had been designing microelectronic "chips" since Large Scale Integrated (LSI) circuits were first introduced commercially in 1969. Today, the staff at Pico includes electronic, electrical and mechanical engineers.

All X-10 product designs and development is done at Pico.X-10 PLC Technology is based on the Power Line Carrier (PLC) signaling "language" that enables control signals to be transmitted anywhere in your house over your existing 220/110 Volt electrical lines. Simply plug in a controller (transmitter) at one electrical outlet and plug in a module (receiver) at any other outlet and you have remote and automated control of that module! This enables you to have remote and automated control of lights and appliances from anywhere in your house.

To enhance the Power Line Carrier transmitters and receivers, X-10 released a range of hand held wireless and Infra red controllers which provide the consumer with the opportunity to have total remote control over TV, Video, Stereo,Security, Lighting and Heating in their homes and offices.Most of the largest manufacturers of professionally installed burglar alarm systems have incorporated X-10 transmission capability into their panels to permit flashing lights during an alarm condition and for direct control of lights and appliances. It is X-10's policy to encourage such applications of its PLC Technology.

X-10 has had for many years an interface for Home Personal Computers. Due to the increase of PC sales throughout the world, X-10 have recognised the need for a more powerful interface plus a flexible PC software program. This has led to the introduction of the "ActiveHome" system.
