Its a custom to pay something like "Ransom" for the new born after the 31 day, and it is a special thing when the first born is a boy. As written " You shall bless me every new born". The father to the baby talks with a priests (Cohen) so he will lead the ceremony. The "ransom" should be silver no less than 100 grams. Before as the law sais , the priest would keep the "ransom", but nowerdays it is customary that the priest returns the jewlery and instead gets paid for his service. On the night of the Pidion, as honour to the fathers mother will pass the baby to the father. The father takes in one hand the baby, and in the other the "ransom" silver, and the ceremony begins:

 

  • Priest: Is this your first born son?
  • Father: Yes he is.
  • Priest: Your wife did not have a miscarriage before?
  • Father: No.
  • Priest: Was the baby born in a regular delivery? (Not Ceaserian)
  • Father: Yes.
  • Priest: In that case, this baby belongs to me, and if you wish you may pay his ransom as the lord word "..his ransom five silver shequels..." When you (to the baby) were in your mother's woom you were the property of the lord and your perents, now you are my property and your perents wishes to pay your ransom, you the first born, blessed as written: "...Bless me every first born of the people of Israel, both human and beast are mine..."
  • Father: I wish to pay teh ransom for my son
  • The father gives the priest ransom silver and and the priest blesses the son.

    Than all the family friends and neigbors gathers for a feast.

    The Pidion is made only to a first born son.
