Spring Holiday 1998

Singapore & Malaysia (Pulau Tioman & Pulau Besar)

On 7 March we boarded the catamaran at Malmö City International for a SAS flight to Singapore via Copenhagen and a short stop at Bangkok Airport. Most of the planning was made by surfing the WWW. We did also get some help making reservations for the hotels in Singapore from a local friend.

When we arrived in Singapore we took the airport bus to the hotel which was fairly close to the Golden Mile Complex bus station where the coaches for Malaysia leave. We had originally planned to take the catamaran from Singapore to Tioman, but it had not yet started to run for the season. We went by coach from Singapore to Mersing (Five Star Company). The coach trip was well organised with a short transfer of bus at the border station in Johor Bahru. We found information regarding the buses on this site, but when we called the numbers given we were told that reservations could not be made by phone. We took an early (very early) bus and arrived at lunchtime.

When we arrived at Mersing we found it easy to get boat transportation to Tioman. We choosed to go by a fast boat. This was arranged by the bus guide, but we could just as well have gone down to the harbour because all the activity seemed to circle around transportation to the islands. The cost was 50 MYR per person and the boat took us directly to the hotel's jetty.

At Pulau Tioman we stayed at the Berjaya Beach Resort and we had made our reservations via Asiatravel.

This is a picture of Dag at the veranda of our chalet.

The chalets were situated over a large area among palms and flowers. This is of a type 'Standard chalet', including private bathroom, air condition, tv and minibar etc.

This is the new pool at the Berjaya (there are two). Close to the new one there is also a bubble pool, a childrens pool and a water glide. To the immediate right you have the seafront. This is the place where you spend your lazy days and the lunch restaurant and a sunken bar are easy at hand.

Just below the pool you have the beach with nice sand and some corals. If you like to swim in the sea you have to wade a bit.

These two pictures were taken close to the beach bar just after the sun had sunken into the sea.

Just outside the shore you have a small island.
The pool looked real attractive even after dark. This was also the view from the large restaurant situated by the pool during dinner.

The main part of Pulau Tioman is very hilly and it is only close to the shore that you have buildings and people living.

This picture was taken very early the morning we left, thus the mist. If you look very close you can see the hotel.

To the left you see a close-up of one of the flowers in the garden close to our chalet.

To the right you see one of the other places we passed on the way back to Mersing. We do not know the name of this place but it certainly looked nice and relaxing.

The next stop was Pulau Besar, click here to see our pictures.
