Spring Holiday 1998

Continued from page 1

After the first days of luxury on Pulau Tioman we went to more moderate luxury at Pulau Besar.

We once again took a boat from Mersing, but this time a much shorter ride. When we arrived on a Thursday around noon we were told that we were probably the only tourists on the island for the next 24 hours. This was probably true as we certainly did not see any other tourists, only the employees of the resorts preparing for the arrival of their week-end guests.

We stayed at the 'Radin Resort & Safaris' which has some chalets very close to the beach. They also have chalets further inwards in, what looked like, a converted coconut plantation. The only other resort on Besar that we were able to find detailed information about on the WWW was the d'Coconut. The reservation was made in the old fashion fax way, but you can find info about Besar hotels on this site.

This is a view of the beach in front of the Radin resort. The next resort on the left hand side is the d'Coconut and between them there is a sea sport rental 'shed'.

The beach had a lot of sand flies on our first day, but the next day when the resort had more guests the beach was sprayed in the morning and the sand flies were not a big problem after that. The beach was at its best at high tide as it had sharp corals from the low watermark and outwards. So - bathing shoes as always in this part of the world!

For us Nordic people Malaysia has a very hot climate and as we had almost no wind at all we found the jetty to be the most enjoyable place.

You could feel the 'cooling' wind a little bit better out there, there were no sand flies and it had a roof to provide shadow when the sun became too hot.

The jetty (originally meant for passangers from the boats) was also a great place for swimming as its stairs was great for getting out of the water. (Well, it was also used to get into the water by those who do not enjoy the thrills of a good dive...)
This was the local ferry/fishing boat. The colours does not show very well on this picture - it was bright and very fitting to this, for us, exotic environment.
This is a photo of some of the chalets at the 'Radin Resort & Safaris' at night. It is a very charming place to stay. We have seen the resort being mentioned in an architectural magazine.

The restaurant at the Radin is an experience in itself, especially at dinnertime in the dark. It is completely open and you practically have your dinner on the beach.

It is basically a big palm leaf roof with an indoors construction made only for the kitchen and the reception area.

After these wonderful days in Malaysia we took the bus back to Singapore and stayed there for a couple of days of shopping before Adrienne went home and Dag started working.
