Holly Marie Combs is the twenty-five year old actress who played Kimberly Brock on the emmy-winning television series Picket Fences and currently stars in Charmed on the WB. She has also appeared in several movies, ranging from independent productions, such as Simple Men, to the academy-award winning film Born on the Fourth of July, to made for television movies like Our Mother's Murder.
This author believes that Holly Marie Combs is the best young actress on television. Critics and colleagues have praised Holly's work. Michael Pressman, co-executive producer of Picket Fences, declared, "She's one of the brightest and most talented actresses. She has an absolutely natural quality and exudes charm and warmth both on and off the screen." Ed Martin of Inside Media named Holly the best supporting actress in a television drama in his year-end entertainment review for 1994 (while naming the X-Files as the best television drama).
Phil Kloer praised Holly Marie (along with Sara Gilbert of Roseanne) for her portrayal of Kimberly Brock on Picket Fences in an article on teenagers on television:
The absolute teen queens-- standout actresses served by meaty writing-- are Holly Marie Combs and Sara Gilbert. Both young women have dealt with their sexuality without being exploited (by their boyfriends or their writers); both brood without sinking into self-indulgence; both must pull toward independence and that longing for family security that are the hallmarks of adolescence.
Concerning Holly's performance in Love's Deadly Triangle: The Texas Cadet Murder, Manuel Mendoza of the Dallas Morning News declared:
Holly Marie Combs, best known as the teen in Picket Fences who could put adults in their place, nearly carries the movie with her quietly chilling performance as Diane.
T.V. Guide called the episode of Relativity in which Holly guest starred, "the finest expression of angst-ridden young love since My So-Called Life."
Charmed star Alyssa Milano has said of Holly's comedic gifts, "She can be dry like Bob Newhart or physically hilarious." Best friend Shannen Doherty added, "Holly's fiery and feisty. I knew she'd be perfect [for Charmed]."
Holly has been nominated for two SAG Awards (Screen Actor's Guild), along with the rest of the Picket Fences cast, for best ensemble acting in a television drama.
People Magazine has named Holly one of its "Breakthroughs" for 1998.
