Crows

I feel good today. Normally I wouldn't write anything on a day like this, but since I had a new experience, I'll write about that. I spent the day ringing crows, or crow chicks (as in babies) rather. In order to do this I had to climb the trees where the nests were located, then try to get both hands free so I could attach the ring around their little feet and write down how many there were etc.

This might not sound like a whole lot of fun, but for me it was. I spent the day out in the fields, looking for the nests, then climbing up, in some cases more than 50 feet, which was quite exciting (ok, ok, scary as hell, but fun too). The scary part, though was the "crow ladder" I had to use if there weren't enough good branches. Basically this is several pieces of steel tubing with foot pins sticking out at regular intervals, and it's not overly stable when hung on a branch 30 feet above. Quite an adrenaline kick each time I made it, and I did fear for my life a few times, which I think it a good thing to do every now or then. Cleanses the mind, or something :).

Oh, and the little crows _were_ kind of cute, although in a very ugly way. Imagine a small, sleepy dinosaur with feathers growing out of it, and there you have it. But sort of adorable all the same, and I really enjoyed watching the imminent sunset from the treetops, 50 plus feet above the forest floor below... that was pretty powerful, and I wish I could share it with you all. Then again, you could always go climb a tree and see for yourselves I guess :).
