Straw weaving
To weave with straw is an old swedish tradition and the weavings are durable and ease to handle.
This handicraft demands extra fine rye straw. The swedish province Dalsland has a special rye raised for handicraft. It’s this rye I use.

The straw is thickest by the root end and will be more slender up against the ear. Therefore I use different parts of the straw depending on which effect I want to have. The straw has nodes so called knees. Weaving with straws where I keep the knees gives the product a special image.
The weft can be one single straw, double straws or bunches with straws.
The warp can be thick as in the table mats and christmas mats, or slender as in the runners.
I use yarn of flax or cotton. The warp can be close or loose. It can be in different colors and designs.
The weaves can be washed in warm water. If necessary use washing-up liquid or washing powder. Squeeze.
Let dry by hanging the straw vertical.
