Northern Territory - Outback Australia

Tue Oct 17 1995:
A whole day on the GHP coach. All the way there landscape was completely brown and flat, with only dry bushes and grass. The road was almost straight and not even a village along the way, except some houses at Barkley Homestead, where it was a break for dinner. At 19.00 I arrived in Tennant Creek and stayed there one night.

The YHA hostel in Tennant Creek where I stayed one night.

Wed Oct 18:
I joined an interesting half day trip in the surroundings of this mining city. We visited some minefields and learnt about the history of the town. At 23.15 an overnight GHP bus departed for Alice Springs.

Thu Oct 19:
Arrival very early (at 5.00) in Alice Springs. I spent the whole day in this "red centre capital". Some highligts was the view from ANZAC hill and the waterless Todd River. A very hot day (around +35 deg. C) and I bought lots of bottled water to be prepared for the coming weekend roundtrip.

Todd River in Alice Springs. Without water!

Fri Oct 20:
Up early, a GHP departed at 7.45 for a whole weekend in the red centre.

A view of Ayers Rock, but this is not all .......

....... I also wanted to climb it!

Some people may wonder why I wore a jacket on such a place where it normally is around +40 degree (Celsius). The reason is that the whole weekend I spent in the "Red Centre" was unnormally cold (10 to 15 degree) and windy!

Kings Canyon - a Grand Canyon in a smaller scale.

Katherine Gorge - a narrow passage with deep water (ca 60 m!).

And now some shots from a safari at Kakadu National Park - The home of Crocodile Dundee!

Twin falls, a beautiful place. Really worth the effort getting there (plenty of km on unsealed, then a walk and finally about one km swimming!). There's not much power in the waterfall due to end of dry season.

The pool below Gunlom Falls - a famous spot from Crocodile Dundee I (where they grilled a large lizard)!

A termite nest. Have you seen such a large one?

Here we are, the whole group at Nourlangie Rock - another famous spot from Crocodile Dundee II.

... and then the journey goes on.

Sunset on a beach in Darwin.

Victoria River, between Katherine and Kununurra (WA).

And then I crossed the border to Western Australia.
