Neuroscience of the Mind

To those who have expressed interest in the Project Centennial Conference:

The following gives a final program schedule with talk titles. Those who provided a regular mail address will also receive a formal brochure after Labor Day. Those who have already sent in registration materials will receive the brochure, a confirmation letter, and travel directions.

I am also pleased to announce that we have added Long Island Jewish Medical Center as a joint sponsor. This means (at least) two things:

  1. LIJMC staff are entitled to the same discount conference fee as NYNG and NYAS members;
  2. We are now able to offer Continuing Education credits for this activity (see below). For those of you who have not yet registered, you may still use the forms you received to register, and simply add $10 to the conference registration fee (and dues fee if joining NYNG) if you would like to register for CE credit. For those who have already registered for the conference, and would like to receive CE credits, you may send an additional $10 now or later (either in response to your Registration Confirmation letter, or at the conference). For _all_ CE requests, pleaseindicate which category you are requesting (physician, psychologist, or social work).

Thanks again for your interest; we look forward to seeing you at the conference!

Robert M. Bilder

Jointly Sponsored by Long Island Jewish Medical Center, The Long Island Campus for the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, New York Neuropsychology Group, and The New York Academy of Sciences Linguistics Section.

During September and October 1895 Sigmund Freud wrote his "psychology for neurologists", published posthumously as the Project for a Scientific Psychology (1950). It has been a magnet for controversy, seen as the clearest and most concise view of the origins of psychoanalytic theory, or as an "aberration" that Freud himself abandoned. Despite varying perceptions of the Project, it stands as a landmark attempt to understand the neural substrates of behavior. A spirit of scientific inquiry into the fundamental bases of human behavior drove the Project, and now drives this centennial conference.

Neuroscience of the Mind... delineates the historical contexts of this work, critically evaluates scientific progress towards the Project's ultimate goals, and considers future directions that will help "... furnish a psychology that is a natural science" (Freud, 1895/1950, S.E., p. 295).
