Lists of Sites & Starting Points

Yanoff's Special Internet Connections

One of the first "lists of lists" made available on the Internet, this source compiled and maintained by Scott Yanoff, provides links to all types of Internet resources: Gopher, FTP, Telnet, WWW and WAIS databases.

CERN, WWW Subject Catalogue

This project by one of the founders of the World Wide Web initiative is a list of resources by subject heading. This main page is located at CERN in Switzerland, so downloading time can be a problem especially over a modem. But each main subject heading page is maintained by different institutions around the world, many of them in the U.S.

Whole Internet Catalog

Based on the bestselling book (current edition available in the Library), this page lists 1000 or so links in a range of categories.

Comprehensive Lists of Sites

This is a list of sites that can be searched by limiting to the domain name eg. au=Australia, ca=Canada or even tuns.ca or dal.ca. Great for locating sites when the only information you have is where the site is.

EINet Galaxy

A searchable index put together by EINet Group, a commercial provider of network communication and information services. Has a very comprehensive list of headings and an easily used search interface.

Yahoo

A list of sites by categories, compiled by two grad students, David Filo and Jerry Yang, at Standford. It has links to over 30,000 pages and one of the best search engines for locating sites. It searches URL's and titles (not content, see Lycos) and can use boolean logic.

Lycos search

This searchable index from Carnegie Mellon University contains over 2 million sites. With it you can search for key word occurances within documents on WWW pages or in Gopher documents.

WWWW - the WORLD WIDE WEB WORM

Oliver McBryan, a professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Colorado in Boulder, developed this search interface. It searches URL's , titles and hyperlinks within a document.

Architecture, Computer Science and Engineering Links

The Library has put together the following list of Internet sites that we hope will be useful to faculty, students and staff at TUNS. It contains links to WWW, gopher and telnet sites. You will probably have to configure your browser with a telnet client in order to use the telnet links. The TUNS Home Page has telnet programs for most platforms (via the Gopher Tree link) if you don't already have one.
