1st of November 1998 - Some great screencaptures!
Sent to me from Evan. They are from the MTV story about the When You Believe videoshooting. Mariah looked absolutely increadible as usual. I resized them a bit and here they are:

1st of November 1998 - The missing #1 - I Don't Wanna Cry.
I didn't even notice this until Firouz told me. On the tracklisting on the Sony Music SWEDEN homepage the US #1 song I Don't Wanna cry is missing! Guess it was too hard fitting that song when there already were 18 on the CD. (They have to add Without You of course.) This applies to the European CD release.
1st of November 1998 - Check out these cool realvideos!
Okay, they're small and bad quality. But they had one advantage, they were downloadable! I took them from the Sony Japan homepage. So check them out because they're neat. Save them to your drive and then play them.

1st of November 1998 - Plugging some sites.
I thought I would tell you about two very good Mariah sites by my friends Julie and Lydia. Julies site is called Close My Eyes and won the celebrity site award a few days ago, Lydias site is called Absolutely McLil and has some extremly great design. So check them out!

1st of November 1998 - Mariah quote of the day.
Lets see if I remember this properly. Mariah was interviewed on English radio and someone called in and asked "how many copies do you have to sell to be #1 next week?" and Mariah said "Well, it depends on how much the #2 record sells. If the #2 record sells 1 copy then I'd only have to sell 2 copies to be #1." I thought that sounded kinda funny =)
1st of November 1998 - Butterfly or Mariah tattoo?
As I wrote before, someone from Sony Australia said Mariah was searching for this fan with a Butterfly tattoed on her forearm, Mariah supposedly saw her during a concert she held. Well, now John tells me he watched E! News and they say it's a tattoo of Mariah, not of a Butterfly. SO I wonder what it is! A tattoo of Mariah would look pretty nice, but it's somewhat a bit TOO much! =)
1st of November 1998 - Halloween time.
It wasn't a particulary happy halloween here in Sweden because over 60 teenagers died in a fire when they visited a halloween party. So my thought goes out to them and their families. Anyone know where Mariah is going this halloween? Last year she dressed as Farrah Fawcetts character in Charlies Angels, and her friends were the other two angels. This text below is from Mariah in her own words from the fabulous, (no capital FABULOUS) Australian Mariah A Musiclive Tribute magazine:
======================
1995
I'm getting ready to have a halloween party soon, a costume party. That's my favourite thing that I do every year and everybody comes. A lot of different record company people and different friends of mine. But everybody has a great time because you become someone totally different and a lot of people, you can't even recognize them. Last year (1994) I was a cave woman. This year I'm being cat woman.
====================

Okay, this is kindof irrelevant although it's about holidays and what Mariah always wishes for - snow for christmas. Well, what I wanted to say was that she should come to Sweden because here it has been snowing all night! I love snow =)

1st of November 1998 - Mariah gets no love on Whitney site.
Just came back from the biggest Whitney site www.whitney-fan.com and the news there is that it's "confirmed" that there are two versions of When You Believe. "The fantastic version that only was heard by one person in Canada where Whitney outsings Mariah, and the new remastered sucky version out on radio now where Mariah is heard more." Worst piece of crap I ever read if you want to know my meaning. To Canadians reading this, I know many of you listen to Z95, and that's the station that supposedly played this "greater" version. So did anyone hear it a few weeks ago?
1st of November 1998 - Billboard about the duet, great news!
Well, the above Whitney site does have its bright sides, here's an article from Billboard magazine I found on there. It's written by Theda who I've been talking to a few times, she writes the Hot 100 singles spotlight for Billboard.
===========================
"While I'm Your Angel is starting to heat up at radio, Whitney Houston & Mariah Carey's When You Believe (from The Prince Of Egypt) has just shipped to radio after an extensive setup by DreamWorks and Geffen. Mark Gorlick, head of promotion for DreamWorks, says, "When the ink was dry on the contract, well before the song was even recorded, radio's antecipation was high, because when you pair artists of Whitney and Mariah's stature, it is an event".

This issue, the song leaked to 37 Hot 100 stations, most of which didn't start playing the song until Oct. 23. Even without a full week of airplay, When You Believe earned 11 million audience impressions, landing just short of the 75-position Hot 100 Airplay, which reflects Oct 21-27 radio activity. Expect that song to explode onto next issue's chart.

Hot 100 Singles Spotlight asked some programmers which song will become the biggest hit. Everyone polled said both songs are great but ultimately cast their vote for When You Believe. Paul "Cubby" Bryant, music director of WHTZ, says "Both songs are so good it is hard to make a choice, but the movie will push When You Believe into the lead."

Dale O'Brien, PD of WWZZ Washington, D.C., agrees that the film will help When You Believe. He also points out that I'm Your Angel is testing top five with is P1 listeners, but since "Whitney hasn't had anything lately, and Celine is over-saturated from Titanic," he has to choose When You Believe. Even WBBM's Bradley gave his vote to When You Believe over hometown favorite Kelly because "the song is, in my opinion, a classic for all time".

Jay Michaels, music director of KRBE Houston, says that When You Believe is "more powerful lyrically and emotionally, not to mention it has a better hook". Jay Towers, music director of WIOQ Philadelphia, says that I'm Your Angel has "good female appeal, but persistent rumours that Whitney and Mariah fought while recording the song make it even more of an event record" Meow, What are your thoughts?"
===========================

I for one look forward to see what happens to the song on radio next week! I hope all of you helps out and requests the song from your local radiostations!

1st of November 1998 - Mariah front page news.
This was very cool for me since I live here. This week Mariah is all over the front page of the Sony Music Sweden site, www.sonymusic.se. The Swedish (and European) CD will be an 18 track one with the 13 #1 hits plus Sweetheart (pop version without rap), When You Believe, Whenever You Call Duet, Without You and Do You Know. Yes, the song is called Do You Know. For that song they write "Theme from Mahogany" in paranthesis, is that the original title? I'm don't know much about Diana.
1st of November 1998 - Great review for Sweetheart!
This is from Europes most respected R&B magazine Blues And Soul. Unfortunatly they'll probably be proven wrong about the hit potential, this song hasn't done as good as it deserves. Here's the review:
=====================
JD & MARIAH CAREY: Sweetheart - So So Def Records
Producers: Mariah Carey, Jermaine Dupri
Writers: R.Davis, P.Warner
Remixers: Jermaine Dupri, Carl So-Lowe, Eddie Arroyo
If you're taking bets on potential number one hits, I'll place mine on this hot number, particularly in the US. Mariah is the queen of the charts, whilst Jermaine Dupri is probably not only the hottest producer of '98, but possibly will continue to be well into the next millennium. This update of Rainy Davis' semi-obscure dancer from the last decade, is one of a quartet of 'new' songs on Ms Carey's forthcoming greatest hits package " Ones" and also features on JD's all-star opus " Life In 1472" . Radio has already championed this midtempo shuffler in its original album form and these street-friendly interpretations continue the cool vibe, complete with sassy rap too. There's even a housed-up version by Eddie Arroyo that'll keep the clubbers happy too. A hit of mega-proportions. (LD)
====================

I was hoping to get the single in Sweden this week, but I couldn't find it, so I haven't really heard these new mixes.

But click here for a site that has some short Sweetheart remix soundclips. (It's Sony Taiwan.) The Lil Jon remix sounds HOT!

1st of November 1998 - Another good Divas Live review for Mariah.
This one is from the Baltimore Sun and they write like this:
========================
Franklin's claims to divahood are unquestioned, and the fact that she dominates the two all-diva extravaganzas at the album's close shows that even her colleagues defer to her gifts (and for good reason, given the power she musters on the gospel raver "Testimony"). But the album's greatest surprise comes from Carey, who not only offers an admirable mix of attitude and ability on "Make It Happen" but actually holds her own against Franklin on "Chain of Fools."
=======================

They also liked Celine Dion's performance and gave the album 3 out of 5. Speaking of Divas live, the album slipped quite alot on the US chart this week, and the video was down from #3 to #5.

1st of November 1998 - Some Mariah mentions on MTV.
Here is what Rhian tells me:
I just got this, not really news but it's cool anyway, about 3 of my fav. people. Mariah, Brandy and Jennifer Love Hewitt. On MTV NEWS 1515, they were on the set a couple months back of I Still Know What u Did Last, summer. They were interviewing Brandy and Love. Brandy said that one day she went into her dressing room and she was singing this "Mariah" song, notice noone calls her Mariah Carey anymore! and that Love was doing everything Mariah was doing, and Brandy was impressed, and wanted to work with her, and kinda leaked some info that they might be dueting for the soundtrack.
=======
I like those three girls too! Brandy will not be on the soundtrack, but Jennifer will. Here's a story about Jay Z from Tomas:
Hey, on TV News 1515 they did an interview with rapper Jay-Z and he was walking down this street and someone asked him for an autograph and the fan had nothing for him to sign it but the Nov. issue of Vibe (MC on cover) so Jay-Z signed it and said let me do it on Mariah's nice belly or something like that and he signed it and said "i gave Mariah a tattoo."
=======
Was that about the lamest thing you ever heard? "I gave Mariah a tattoo" =) Well, maybe it sounded funny when he said it.
1st of November 1998 - The song she kept.
People with good memory knows that Mariah talked alot about a song she kept from the Butterfly album to put for the soundtrack for her movie. Well, the movie's been delayed, so I think the song she kept might be Do You Know Where You're Going To, and she's now putting it on international releases of #1's. What do you think?
1st of November 1998 - NRJ radio interview!
This will be the first news for the month, October was a very busy month with 140 news stories! Also I thought it was about time to change the look on this site.

Arnaud from France sends me this interview. Check out his site for more cool french stuff!
http://www.mygale.org/~arnaud1

*This interview took place last week*
- NRJ : Mariah, thanx to be here

- MARIAH : Thank you

- NRJ : so 1st question : when you were young, down there in the United states, did you even think that one day you would be so famous, in a country which is so far from the US, just like FRANCE ?

- MARIAH : No, it's weird, were I was growing up, I never thought of anything outside of america like... I didn't , I just didn't think about it, like you know, you think, OK, I wanna go make a record, I wanna make an album and I wanna hear myself on the radio and you never think "wow : people and countries where I've never been are gonna be listening to my songs" It's amazing!!

--->Music : When You Believe

- NRJ : Mariah, what is the difference between singing with the Boyz II men, and singing with Whitney?

- MARIAH : it's Totally different when you sing with another female than when you sing with a man. I've never done that really before on a recording. There is always controversy about that Whitney and I hate each other : we didn't really even know each other, so, you know I think it was cool that we got together and did it...

- NRJ : Do you think that Whitney will listen to your new album?

- MARIAH : I have no idea... hahahaha!!!

- NRJ : Mariah, will you stay with us'till the end of the show?

- MARIAH : Yeah, Right!!

--->Music : Fantasy

--->Music : Without you

- NRJ : Still with Mariah for that interview : Mariah choose only one country in europe, and only one radio : NRJ, here in France So here is a question from the NRJ listeners:

-a girl : You're gonna launch a 'best of', I wanted to know if there were gonna be remixes or album versions on that new album?

- MARIAH : It's original : the original versions of all the Numbers 1, and then I have 4 new tracks on the album.

- NRJ : Mariah, was it your idea to make an album with all the Number 1 songs?

- MARIAH : No, actually, it wasn't my idea, well, it was originally, the company said "you know, we'll make a greatest hits album and I said no : I haven't been out long enough to make a greatest hits, You know, I mean some people have been out 15 years to finally have their greatest hits, but when I did the duet with whitney I decided that it would be nice to have something of my own to put out with that duet on it, and it was really for the fans, who made those records number 1...

- NRJ : You all know Lame, that new french artist? The fact is that Lame was one of the Background singers in Mariah's concert in Paris. We went to see her, and she has a little question for Mariah :

- LAME : Hi Mariah... I'd like to know what you remember of your only concert in Paris Bercy?

- MARIAH : I really enjoyed the crowd : the crowd was great, I love France, I think it's Beautiful and I really love the FANS there : they are very supportive with me..

--->Music : Honey

- NRJ : Mariah do you remember having sacrificed thing to succeed?

- MARIAH : I don't know, I mean, nothing is perfect. 5 years ago, I could either have gone out and had fun and parties all nights longs, and can't (here she says something I can't hear because of the DJ's translation.)

- NRJ : Did anything else changed since you were 18?

- MARIAH : Well, obviously, I have the ability financially to be you know... I'm pretty famous, I can go on trips, Do what I want, whatever, but not being a pivate person is a weird thing.

- NRJ : Mariah, do you remember that day when you told yourself "That's it, I succeeded, I'm a Star"?

- MARIAH : No , I remember when I heard my song on the radio for the 1st time and that was a big deal for me... I heard VOL on the Radio in New York for the 1st time, and that was just like I wanted it to be on the radio, and it was a song that I have written, and it was, you know, a big deal for me...

- NRJ: where were you when this happened?

- Mariah : I was in a car

- NRJ : Don't move, The Mariah Carey interview continues Right after this

--->Advertisements

- NRJ : Back with Mariah Carey on NRJ. Here is an other question from an NRJ listener:

- a guy: Hi Mariah. I wanted to know if it's not boring to be so famous.

- MARIAH : Hum, I don't know if Boring's the right word, but I would say it's sometimes difficult.

- NRJ : How is it going on with the Paparazzi or the fans running after you?

- MARIAH : Yes, I mean, I'm the kinda person who will pose for pictures, I don't have a problem, it's not a big deal to me, I stand there and sign autographs, I do that, but hum, It's weird like the other day, I was walking down the street and suddenly, there were like 5 cameras around me, I didn't even know where they were coming from ,sometimes it's strange, but anyway...

- NRJ : Is there something that you don't like in you?

- MARIAH : Well, if I give all these things away, we're gonna start focusing on it

--->Music : My all, Stay awhile

- NRJ : Another question from an NRJ listener:

-Hi Mariah... You're already one of the best in music, so have you got any project in the cinema business?

- MARIAH : Well, actually, right now, the project that I'm the most excited about is a movie about a girl and a guy who are kinda struggling, it's set in the early 80's, and it's, you know, it's about the music industry, and their situation. I'm very happy to work on this film 'cos I'm also working on its soundtrack.

- NRJ : Did you ever think about making movies before?

- MARIAH : Yes, always actually wanted to act, but, you know, my life was different a couple of years ago, and now, I can do what I wanna do at once...

- NRJ : would you have liked to make whitney's role in "the bodyguard"?

- MARIAH : Well, I think that was her thing, so when I'll come out with mine, it will be different, it will be a different thing.

--->Music : Whenever You Call Duet

- NRJ : Mariah, have you got a confident, someone you tell all your secrets?

- MARIAH : I have a few people who I have been friends with since before all this happened, Hum, a very few people. One of which I never get to really see because she lives in Sweden and she can't come back to NY, her name is Josephine, and she helped me a lot when I used to have nowhere to go, nothing to do (no work). I stayed in her apartment, I was sleeping on the floor. There was an other girl from the high school who I'm still calling and talking to. Lots of people were not around when I was needing them... Now when they hear me on the radio, they come back, and you don't even know why...

- NRJ : Will you make a world tour when you'll have finished with all your acting things?

- Mariah : Right now, I'm really focusing on getting this movie going and this number Ones album too, and I'll try to have a tiny bit of a life when I'll come back... It's hard when you're on tour, but I will certainly make a tour after all those films...

- NRJ : And will you come to France?

- Mariah : Yes, I will...

- NRJ : So if you come to France, you have to give the guys some help to succeed seducing you. What does a guy have to do to seduce you?

- MARIAH : hahaha!! I don't know, I don't know, just be, just be real and be a good person, and be funny, not be judgmental and be mature but have the ability to be immature when it's appropriate

- NRJ : To finish with, do you have something to say to all your french fans?

- MARIAH : Thank you for your support and for coming to see me when I'm in France and for listening to my music, and this album is really just to thank you to everybody out there...

-Music: When You Believe
======================

So there it was, very nice interview indeed! I'm glad Mariah is working hard to get her movie going, and the soundtrack will be sensational I'm sure! Funny that she didn't meantion 00 Soul. And I love how she mentions Sweden in many of her interviews! And all the guys out there, you better go practice on being real, funny, injudgmental! =)
