Saturday, 14th of November 1998 - 20/20 interview, first story!
This interview ended 10 minutes ago in USA and Kelly writes me her "review" already!
In my opinion this was her best interview ever. They started talking about her famous story and they showed a bunch of pictures from her growing up and on one of them when she was peering out from a bush. They said something like "but what about the undiscovered past and the one she never has really talken about but only hinted in her music". Barbra asks her about her sister and mariah could barely answer yes to her having taken drugs and stuff, instead she just kinda smiled and nodded her eyes which were kind of watery. Then they talked about her marriage and Mariah said she thought of Tommy more like a father figure then anything else. and that Tommy paid for the entire wedding.(her mother said). She also said he had tried to control her personal life, and she had some restrictions to her life like her clothes, her acting and how she was never told about the movie careers she was offered, she said that she had puten herself in a situation where she was a hostage and that he had eavesdropped and she had felt insecure at times in her home with him. She ended up seeing the difference between his age, and that she shouldn't have to live in fear of argument, so she left him. Then Barbra asked her if she was afraid that Tommy would end her career, then Barbra asked her if she was still in love with him and Mariah said no, but she'd like to be able to talk to him when he's the good guy. She said that the hostage part of Honey wasn't an accident but it was also not on purpose. She said for me Butterfly means a end of an era and the beginning of another. That she goes out on the town making up of the things she missed, such as the way she dresses, and it's more true to who she is.

They showed her writing a song. Then they talked more about her sister and how Mariah supports her mother and helps to take care of her sister. Barbra said all your life you wanted to be a singer and a star and what is your ultimate mission and Mariah said to keep singing and search for ultimate happiness. and she doesn't feel anyone fully understands her or she can trust. Barbra ends it by saying Butterfly has spred her wings and is now free, but it's still a strange world out there then Mariah said 'i would say so'. Then they ended the interview.

The interview was taped in Mariah's home. I LOVED this interview and I thought it was good for only being like a 20 minute interview, I think I learned more about her emotionaly in this interview than in any of her other one's.

As I sit here in disbelief, I must say that Mariah's interview with Barbara Walters was oustandingly beautiful. Mariah seemed fragile and somewhat afraid, yet this interview was so "upfront" that Mariah actually presented her trueself in a style that every fan, every music critic, every skeptic would find an answer to all the questions that resided in his/her state of mind. Mariah has shown, through this interview, that she is the talent, she is the Mariah we've all had doubts she was. I won't rephrase any part of her interview because I feel that the entire conversation between herself and Barabara was important in every way. I hope that every music fan gets an opportunity to see it. Again, it was beautiful and Mariah will yet get to present herself as an open interviewee as she was today.

Hey Anderz. I just saw the interview with Mariah on 20/20 and I have to say that that was the most touching and open interview I've ever seen. She was so honest and it was hard for her to accept the fact that Tommy was controlling of her in their relationship. She was close to tears twice; once when Barbara asked her if she thought that Tommy was tapping her phones and the other was I think about her sister's prostitution and drug-using when Mariah was younger. I wish the people that have said Mariah has changed or become "slutty" had seen that interview. It would've changed my mind if I had thought that. Mariah's been through so much and people don't understand that she's just trying to be herself after living a life that wasn't really her. I'm glad she's found "most" of herself, but I hope she can smile and be happy again. The only time she had a real smile and not a sad one was when she was talking about her clothes. She's already a butterfly; she just has to learn how to use her wings and fly.

Hi Anderz :) Just a few minutes ago I finished watching the greatest and most emotional Mariah interview I have ever seen in my whole 4 years of fandom. It was difficult to watch at times, as Barbara threw at her the most personal and direct questions probably ever asked to her. She almost seemed like she didn't know what to do, like she was scared. I don't blame her even, because with Barbara you really can't BS your way through it like she usually does. At the highest emotional points I found myself shaking a little for her sake...it was that good. I really think Mariah handled it pretty well. I really feel that she was trying not to make direct accusations towards him, I could see it just by the difficulty she had in answering the questions. Barbara would ask her about the little things (like was he the first man you slept with? YES.) and she could answer them fairly easily, it was only when she started getting into details about the controlling relationship that she had trouble. Mariah said she thinks that because Tommy was older and more experienced in every aspect it seemed like he had the upper-hand. She talked about the movie offers that she had, she admitted that she was never told about them because Tommy didn't think acting would be good for her career. Mariah said she knew some of the roles she could have had, but better not mention them (I'm thinking along the lines of "Bodyguard"). When Barbara started getting into the specifics of the control-issue, Mariah had a lot of trouble. Barbara asked her straight out if Tommy redialed phone numbers or listened to her conversations through intercoms. Mariah got this very painful look on her face, she closed her eyes (steadied her feet on the ground, raised her head to the sky) and you could see her eyelids twitching (like she was going to cry) then all of the sudden she looked up and shakily smiled saying "I have a new record coming out" and then dropped her head into her hands. My heart really went out to her because I could tell she was being honest....it was too apparent. It was also obvious that she didn't want to make trouble with Tommy, or blatantly accuse him of anything. Barbara asked Mariah about Alison and once again she got a little teary-eyed, but she didn't really say anything new about that except for the fact that because her sister was like that, she wasn't. You know? It gave her some sort of an example of what can happen to you if you do this. Interestingly enough, Mariah's mother was also interviewed. She mentioned that the wedding was completely and totally Tommy-made, a "Tommy Production", but it was a beautiful wedding. She also said that there was a permanent fear for Mariah's career, she said she would always be a little afraid that Tommy could break Mariah's career, although I feel she has nothing to worry about. Mariah only has 2 more albums left on Sony before she is free of her contract and I do think that she'll be moving on. There were a lot of very cute pictures of Mariah when she was younger and she was a very beautiful young lady! One other thing, Mariah talked about her videos, particularly the "Honey" video. Barbara asked her about the similarities between the video and her life and at first Mariah gave the usual "I just wanted to get dressed up in Bond-girl clothes and play in the water bit" but Barbara saw right through that. Mariah finally admitted that it wasn't an accident, that parts of it were meant to be interpreted exactly how they were interpreted. I guess I always knew that though. One last thing, Barbara was talking about before Mariah married Tommy, when she first met him and he was romantically interested in her. She was saying that this man was 20 years older than her and "he was married, by the way". Well, this was really the first time anyone has ever directly accused Mariah of having an affair with a married man and I think it honestly shocked Mariah that she'd have the courage to say that to her. I don't think she was expecting that at all, she dejectedly answered with "Well he told me he was separated". I don't believe that, maybe he did tell her that but she's smart enough to realize the obvious. I could understand the fact that she was 18 and completely overwhelmed though. Anyway, Barbara didn't buy it either, she looked directly at Mariah and said "Look, I don't want to play psychologist here, but this man was 20 years older than you. Did you see him as a father figure?" (or something close to that). Mariah said yes. :) 20/20 contacted Tommy and his PR people told them that he had the highest respect for Mariah as an artist (note: he didn't say as a person) and wanted to maintain an amicable professional relationship with her (note: he didn't say personal). Oh...Mariah also admitted that she didn't love Tommy any more, but she still cared about him as a person. I was very happy with this interview and I felt that Mariah was being completely honest with us. She didn't play any of her guessing games and she didn't try to change the subject (well except when she said "I have a record coming out"). I am really proud of her because I know that took guts, and lots of them. You guys have all got to see this, I give it two great big thumbs UP! -Amy

Pheeeeeeeeeew. Seems like a very dramatic interview indeed! Hopefully Will or Evan will make a RealVideo of it soon!

Saturday, 14th of November 1998 - More about limo lawsuit.
Seems like the lawsuit was cancelled due to a technicality:
=======================
A limousine company's lawsuit against Mariah Carey has been thrown out of court. The owner of Showcase Limousine, who drove the songbird around until she fired him last year, wanted $1.54 million for breach of contract, unjust enrichment, fraud and unpaid bills. But a judge on the case ruled the Jersey-based Showcase was not licensed to work in New York (where Carey lives and works), and therefore had no right to sue. A lawyer for Carey dismissed the whole thing as "frivolous."
======================

You have to figure out what "frivolous" means by yourself.

Saturday, 14th of November 1998 - Oscar buzzzzz
Eric has been reading ET weekly magazine, and they talk about possibilites of an Oscar academy award for Prince of Egypt.
=======================
Could Hollywood's newest studio end-up with two best Picture Nominees in Saving Private Ryan and The Prince Of Egypt? If voters choose to reward one of this year's strong animated films(Beauty and The Beast recieved a 1991 Best Picture Nomination), the classically drawn, Bible-based Prince is a better bet then the newfangled Antz or A Bug's Life. And the Academy had better start looking for a bigger auditorium to fit both Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston, so they can perform their sure-to-be-nominated, Babyface produced Egypt diva duet, "When You Believe"
=======================
Saturday, 14th of November 1998 - Helium girl.
Okay, this ain't Mariah news but since she's my second fav girl so... I just saw Brandy on the Tonight Show and they asked her for some reason if she tries to inhale helium? And she said that she had tried it once, because she wanted to get that high voice Mariah has got! But it didn't work of course. Btw, y'all go see Brandys new movie that opened yesterday!!
Saturday, 14th of November 1998 - Award photo.
I just found this photo of Mariah when she was at the "Annual International Achievement in Arts Awards" and won an award as "Entertainer Of The Year for Distinguished Achievement In Music"
Saturday, 14th of November 1998 - Special MTV site.
I just saw that MTV made a special site for Mariah with her #1's album so check that one out.

Click here to see it.

Saturday, 14th of November 1998 - #1'a album out!!!
Not in my store because I asked today, but it's out on England, Holland, Argentina and probably more places! Australia too in some places. Chris from Australia writes me the "open letter" Mariah writes to her fans (that's us!) in the booklet of the CD, and here it is:
==============================
The inlay says :
An open letter to my fans:
First of all this is not a greatest hits album! Its too soon. I haven't been recording long enough for that! This album is a thank you and an acknowledgement of my gratitude to all of you out there for making these records #1 on the charts.

One day, I will put out a greatest hits with songs that didn't even go on the charts because they were never commercially released (ie Breakdown," "Underneath the stars," "Butterfly," etc) Or songs that didn't go to #1 that are, in my opinion better than some that did (ie "Make it Happen," "Any Time You need a friend," "Endless Love" with Luther, or "Can't let go").

This is a tribute to my fans for all your love and support since day ONE.

I chose the bonus tracks for various reasons - Sweetheart - because I ain't got one! Try that one on! Ha Ha - When you believe (from The Prince of Egypt) - because to me it is almost a miracle that Whitney and I are on a record together! After meeting and working with Whitney Houston, I have gained a whole other layer of respect for this truly talented woman in so many ways. Whenever you call with Brian McKnight - I feel that it was one of the best songs on the Butterfly album and Brian's vocals made it so beautiful. I Still Believe reminds me of the fact that not so long ago I was a teenage girl with nothing to my name but a demo tape, my voice and my ability to write songs. Brenda K Starr treated me like a "Star" and gave me a shot as a back up singer. This remake is my tribute to her.

Thank you to everyone who's ever helped me out in any way, shape or form. Encouragement, support, dedication and friendship. You know who you are (especially you mom).

Thank you God for my life and the faith in you that has brought me this far.

Love and thanks

That was a really nice letter!

Saturday, 14th of November 1998 - Mariah and Barbra.
They put a photo of Mariah and Barbra Walters today at the MBC 20/20 site. Hey, the interview starts in 5 minutes when I write this!! I wonder what Mariah will say about the marriage that "almost destroyed her".
Saturday, 14th of November 1998 - Lucky people!
I just have to tell you about my friends Alexis and Tom. They're going to see Mariah tape The View, then they have tickets to see Mariah tape Mariah TV on MTV, then they have passes to Mariah's recordsigning and then they'll hopefully be at the Mariah party too. Talk about good luck!! I'm not a bit jelous! (Grrrr.)
Saturday, 14th of November 1998 - Special Mariah party.
As I wrote before, the first 500 people on the Mariah recordsigning in New York on Tuesday will be invited to a special Mariah party. But it became a bit unfair, because today people could go to the Virgin recordstore and preorder the album and get free passes to meet Mariah on Tuesdays signing, 700 people got these passes. So we'll see how this'll work out. The party is said to be at a club called Webster Hall.
Thursday, 12th of November 1998 - What a nice smile!
Thursday, 12th of November 1998 - A little something from Entertainment Tonight.
Kay tells me a little something about tonights ET show:
========================
I just saw Entertainment Tonight, and they had the Mariah interview on 20/20. She looked so sad and heartbroken when talking about Tommy, it was pretty emotional. She still tried to avoid the questions, even thought Barbara Walters is a very good interviewer; she was really compassionate to Mariah. Barbara said something very cute to Mariah when talking about her clothes "Now I only have to worry about you getting a cold" referring to Mariah's small clothes, and Mariah said "Well, that's why we have the coats" or something like that. I was really funny, at least Mariah smiled.

And they started showing ads on TV for Mariah's #1s.
=====================

Thursday, 12th of November 1998 - Mariah cooking for the press!
Tomas just sent me this, it's from tabloid New York Daily News today:
===========================
In other Mariah news, she cooked an Italian luncheon yesterday for 22 of New York's magazine journalists in a Trump Parc suite that had been rented for her by her record label.

Calling Carey "Italian by ingestion," journalist Anne Raso, who was there, says Carey's menu consisted of "salad, rigatoni out of the box with a nice homemade marinara sauce and grilled chicken."

The only problem with the meal, says Raso, was its tardiness. "She was supposed to serve at 1 p.m., but the food didn't hit the table until 2:40." Raso says Carey "kept apologizing, but everyone stayed."
==========================

Sounds cool! And ungreatful people, I would have waited at least twice as long for Mariah! (But if it was more than that I'd leave =)

Thursday, 12th of November 1998 - Some things about Mariah's 20/20 interview.
There are some things about this interview on the ABC site. Don't forget to watch the show tomorrow, it'll be great! Anyway, here is what Ryan found for me:
========================
Conversation With a Pop Diva

ABCNEWS.com
Nov. 12 — Mariah Carey went from struggling young artist to pop diva, but it hasn't all been roses.
Carey tells Barbara Walters about the marriage that made her a star, but nearly destroyed her.

The following excerpts are highlights from Walter's interview:

BARBARA WALTERS You said, "I was a wayward child, with the weight of the world that I held deep inside, I learned many things that little ones shouldn't know"... Part of this had to do with your sister, it's on the record, that when you were very young she was on drugs... That she was a prostitute... You must have known. What was it like, for a little girl?

MARIAH CAREY It was a very difficult thing to see... but I think what it did for me was provide me with an inner strength, something— I knew that I didn't want to be... That's why I will never be a promiscuous person. I will never be on drugs. I will never be too out of it to know what I'm doing, or getting myself into. And because I saw all these things growing up, I went the other way.

BARBARA WALTERS Is it true Tommy Mottola was the first man that you went to bed with— you have said this.

MARIAH CAREY Mm-hmm... Right. Because, again, not wanting to get myself into those... bad situations where you're, you know, having a baby and you're a teenager, you know.

BARBARA WALTERS ...you got movie offers. Tommy did not want you to act, to be in movies.

MARIAH CAREY Right.

BARBARA WALTERS Why not?

MARIAH CAREY Probably because he felt that... well what he says, is because he felt it would be bad for my career.

BARBARA WALTERS Making movies would be bad for your career.

MARIAH CAREY Well, that's what, that's what he used to say, so—

BARBARA WALTERS And so you turned down movie roles?

MARIAH CAREY I was not told about them. I would read things like in Variety or US or whatever magazine.

BARBARA WALTERS Now, you sing, and you're a star. What's the ultimate ambition?

MARIAH CAREY Hopefully, continue to be successful. And to find happiness. You know?... Because I'm still looking for that. And I don't like to say that. Because I don't want to seem ungrateful. I know what I have... But, still, inside, I don't feel like I have— there is anyone who necessarily truly and fully understands me. Or who I trust completely
=========================

Oops, seems like Mariah speaks of things in this interview she's never talked about before!! Interesting!

Thursday, 12th of November 1998 - Buy your #1's copy tomorrow!
This was on the official Mariah site:
=========================
Starting this Friday November 13th at 9:00 AM, stop by Virgin Megastore/14th Street and Broadway, to pre-purchase your copy of Mariah's new release. With your purchase, you will receive a V.I.P. pass for your guarantee to meet Mariah and have her sign a copy of her new album for you. Passes are limited.
========================

So I guess this is good news..? But it's bad news for the people I know who plan to travel to New York on the 17th when Mariah is supposed to sign CD's! Very unfair even.

Thursday, 12th of November 1998 - WYB on US radio - update.
My favourite radiosite http://www.fmqb.com just updated. And the news are good! When You Believe debuts at #38 on their Top 40 chart. Another 32 radiostations added it and airplay on the Top 40 stations increased by 200% from 786 plays last week to 2516 plays this week. It's still a long way to the #1 which has 9298 plays. On their "Street Beat" urban chart it enters at #28 (on a 50 position chart) but sad news is that it wasn't the highest new entry, that went to Mya at #27. "Only" 34 of the over 50 stations used for this chart has added WYB.

My second favourite radiosite www.hitmakers.com writes this about the song:
WHITNEY HOUSTON & MARIAH CAREY "When You Believe" (DREAMWORKS/COLUMBIA/ARISTA) - INSTANT SMASH...Over 1800 ROTATIONS already...New: KHKS, POWER96, WAKS, WKTI, PRO-FM, WSNE, WQZQ, WJRZ, KQBT, WAPE, KDON, KFRX, KISR, KISX, KKMG, KLDR, KQKQ, KZII, KZMG, KZZU, WIFC, WIXX, WKHQ, WNKI, WOCQ, WSTW, WTCF, WXLK, and more.
They also mention Mariah as "This week MARIAH CAREY hits stores with her LP "#1's" which features her 13 #1 hits from the past decade plus 4 bonus tracks that include duets with Brian McKnight, Jermaine Dupri and Whitney Houston. A sweet remake of Brenda K. Starr's "I Still Believe" could blow up the airwaves in the new year!"

Thursday, 12th of November 1998 - Another sad night on MTV.
Mariah just lost the MTV European Video Music Award to... guess.. Madonna. So tonight was another sad award night. But listen to the soundfile I just made from the event, it's cool. Click here for MTV sound, RealAudio
Thursday, 12th of November 1998 - Should Mariah win this poll?
Ě think so! Rolling Stones magazine asks: Mariah or Whitney? Whitney leads, she has 1271 votes and Mariah has 599 votes. So I think y'all should go vote for Mariah.

Click here to vote.

Thanx to Jian for the 411.

Thursday, 12th of November 1998 - Whenever You Call single?
This is what Vincent tells me:
========================
On TV: At school we have homeroom and we have a station called Channel 1 News. And they had a music section. They showed the cover of WHENEVER YOU CALL. I think it was from the video cause she was on stage and she had the big hair goin on.

But on the cover it had F/ Brian McKnight. They said (EXACTLY CUZ I WROTE IT DOWN), 'Look for 'Whenever You Call' around December with the launch of Mariah Carey's seventh album 'Number Ones.' The single features Brian McKnight and the song which will not appear on the U.S. version of the album, 'Do You Know' Theme from Mahogony.' and they flashed up a pic of 'Ones.'
========================

So, I'm a bit sceptical that Sony would release a single in USA, and that they would do it in December already. But I certainly hope there will be a single of this great song all over the world!

Thursday, 12th of November 1998 - Sweetheart could have debuted #1?
Excuse me for playing the "what if" game, but I just feel like it. Did you know that on the US charts, Lauryen Hill debuted at #1 with her song Doo Wop last week? And she did it with only selling 64.000 copies so the charts are very week right now. For comparison, this spring NEXT kept My All from #1 although My All sold over 150.000 copies some weeks. The point is that - if Sony had released Sweetheart, don't you think it could have sold at least 80.000 and debut #1?
Thursday, 12th of November 1998 - #1 is out!
The #1's album seems to be out in some recordstores already, one person called Chris just told me this:
==========================
G'day

While browsing in my local music store (Perth, Australia) yesterday, I noticed the #1's cd. I didn't think it was out yet, and thought it was a promo. It wasn't so I bought it. It is awesome. The tracklisting is the same (Australia), but Sweetheart does still have the rap, but the offensive language is edited. I don't know if you have seen the inlay, but it has 3 pictures from the Honey videoclip, one of her as a child, they showed it at her concert I saw, and a bigger (2 folds of the inlay) picture I think from the Sweetheart video. ============================

So I think everyone in Australia and other parts of the world should check out their recordstores.

Thursday, 12th of November 1998 - Europeans will get Mariah too!
Some of you may have noticed the unfairness that Mariah is on US TV all the time (and me whining about it ;), but for those who have VH1 Europe, you lucky people will get alot of Mariah on November 17! Here are the programs they'll show:
Greatest hits of Mariah Carey
VH1 to One
Mariah Carey Unplugged

Well, I don't have VH1 (whining again), so does anyone know if MTV in Europe will show anything with Mariah? Thanx to Amit for the 411.

Thursday, 12th of November 1998 - When You Belive single tracklisting!
Here is what Rhian Emailed me 5 minutes ago:
==========================
Hey! Look what I got from the online Cd store MGE, in their new releases

MARIAH CAREY& WHITNEY HOUSTON - WHEN YOU BELIEVE $9.99 New single pulled from the soundtrack to the animated story of Moses - King Of Egypt.  All those animated 'first borns' look so cute as they die! Includes "When You Believe", "When You Believe (Instrumental)", "I Am Free" (Mariah Carey) and "You Were Loved" (Whitney Houston).
============================

I Am Free is such an EXCELLENT choice, I've always adored that song!!!! I think I'm gonna listen to it right now, because I haven't done that in a while. But what was that "All those animated 'first borns' look so cute as they die!" about?

Thursday, 12th of November 1998 - Lawsuit
Laura writes me that she saw on the news that the lawsuit the limo driver had against Mariah has been dropped. They said it on ABC news and on UPN news so it's most likely true. A few people in the past have tried to rip Mariah of money by suing but noone has got her to court yet. And they never will!! (Loosers =)
Thursday, 12th of November 1998 - Spring Break specials rerun.
Vijay tells me MTV will rerun the Mariah Spring Break specials. (MTV USA of course, does someone know if MTV Europe will have anything at all with Mariah?), check your TV-guide, but here are the times:
11/13 10:00-11:00pm Mariah ! on MTV
11/14 8:00-9:00pm Mariah ! on MTV
Thursday, 12th of November 1998 - Mariah TV!!
Time to start that club again, called "I don't live in NY and it's annoying sometimes"! Here is what Sony Music writes:
==========================
Mariah Carey will be taping "Mariah TV" at MTV Studios (NYC Times Sq. 45th and Broadway) 4:30 PM Sharp. Sunday November 15th. Show up and be a part of Mariah TV. Airdate: Monday November 16th, 1998, 4:30 PM as a part of MTV's Spankin' New Music Week.
===========================

The Mariah fanclub has invited 75 fans who get to be there! They invite the first 75 that Emails them. If you're not a member you can still be in the crowd outside the studio of course.

Thursday, 12th of November 1998 - Mariah and Whitney together!!
Jose tells me Mariah and Whitney will host the VH1 Top 10 countdown show together. I think it is on Friday, but I'm not sure about the time. Check your TV-guide y'all! Also both Jose and JBear415 tells me Mariah/Whitney will be on Access Hollywood tonight, they show the making of the When You Believe video.
Thursday, 12th of November 1998 - Prince of Egypt commersial
Tomas tells me US TV has a Prince of Egypt commersial and when it's playing the song in the background is Whitney and Mariah and When You Belive, the bridge part.
