Friday, 20th of November 1998 - Mariahs emotional release.
Mariah talked about her acting lessons in magazine The West Australian.
==========================
"The best thing about acting is that I am learning within myself," she says. "Before I went there, I was very, very ... not that I didn't have a sense of humour, or I wasn't the same person inside," Carey side-tracks, "but I was very blocked to my emotions.

"I was really just trying to get through every day, like, in this mould. I have learnt to relax more in order to give myself to a part or an emotion. The first time I ever went to class, and the relaxation exercises they put you through, it was like a complete emotional release for me, like turning on a faucet, because I never did that, I never, ever, ever relaxed. Ever. Even lying in my own bed, I couldn't relax."
==========================

She does seem to joke and be relaxed these days, right? I hope she'll ever get to be in those movies too soon!

Friday, 20th of November 1998 - WYB video in Australia.
Kay writes me this:
===========================
Hi Anderz,
I just found this at the Sony Australia site;

Mariah/Whitney Video

The brand new video for 'When You Believe', the awesome new single from Mariah Carey & Whitney Houston, landed in the country today, November 20.

The video will premiere on E! News on Wed, Nov 25 on E! News. Tune in to Ch 10 from 8:00pm.
Friday, 20th of November 1998 - I don't know...
And neither do you!
Jason has an interesting theory:
======================
Mariah got the whole bit about "I don't know and neither do you" from BULLETS OVER BROADWAY. In her chat she said her fave things to say come from AUSTIN POWERS and BOB (2 great movies IMO). In BOB it goes a little something like this:

Olive: I thought I told you to make "horse durves"! Venus: I ain't gonna make anything out of horses. Especially "horse durves," because I don't know what they are and neither do you!

I am guessing this is the source at any rate. I think her "lamb" deal is from AUSTIN POWERS. I am not 100% sure.
=====================

I think I saw this BOB movie, is that the one where they make Broadway a warzone?

Friday, 20th of November 1998 - Cool interview with Mariah!
My friend Rod from Los Angeles heard Mariah in a live radio interview today, and there was some new very interesting things said! Here is what Rod writes:
==========================
ALL THAT GLITTERS: Mariah was asked what she is working on right now and she said that she is working on the soundtrack to "All That Glitters". She said that she hopes to collaborate with other people on this also and wants to make it a really good album.

OO-SOUL: When asked about OO-Soul she said, " I don't know what Chris is doing! Chris---get it together!!!". And then started laughing.

Christmas special: She said that her special will have clips from her concerts in Australia, Japan, Tapei, etc.

BRENDA K. STARR: When asked about Brenda she said that Brenda will be recording a English language album soon ( she has mostly been recording in Spanish lately) and that Brenda and her will collaborate on something for this project.

LEAVING SONY: The interviewer said to Mariah, "You only have 2 more albums left in your contract, will you be staying with Sony?" Mariah answered, "I really have done 8 albums but some of them don't count. That's what they told me. I don't know why they don't count---I was singing on all of them!! I don't know....I don't know and neither do you!". (She has been saying that alot lately! Sounds like Sony is being picky in saying that some of Mariah's albums don't count! I wonder which ones. Maybe the Christmas album and her Unplugged didn't count to them, meaning that she really has 4 more albums with Sony. Mariah didn't sound too thrilled about this at all.

VIDEO OF "I STILL BELIEVE": Mariah said that she also will be filming the video to "ISB" soon and that she didn't know what the concept would be. She said,"anyone have any ideas?" So there is going to be a video I guess. They then played "ISB"

She was also asked about "CRAVE" and she said "Where have you been? It's not in existence anymore!" and then started laughing...she also talked alittle about Brian Mcknight, and that her main focus right now is "on myself". The end of the interview had Mariah introducing "Sweetheart" and then they thanked her and played the song.
===========================

Now I got mixed feeling reading this. First I got happy that Mariah might collaborate with Brenda and that there will be a video for I Still Believe. But then I got mad at Sony for trying to cheat Mariah! She really did sing on all those albums!!! Trust me, I've listened alot =) So damn Sony if they're trying to fool Mariah.

Friday, 20th of November 1998 - Sweetheart a hit in Holland!!
Well, as far as I know, this single is only released in Holland and in Germany. Yesterday I reported that it's very successful in Germany, moving from #29 to #15 in it's third week. Now, in Holland and it's second week it moves from #26 to #14!!
Friday, 20th of November 1998 - Mariah AND Whitney on Oprah next week??
That is what they say on Whitney's official fanclub-site. Whitney will be appearing, along with Mariah Carey on the Oprah Winfrey show! She's taping this week and they hope to air it next week. Air date is not confirmed...but check local listings to catch Whitney and Mariah talking to Oprah.
Friday, 20th of November 1998 - Nice story about meeting Mariah!
This is from Brianne who visited Mariah's recordsigning this Tuesday.
=========================
When she came down the excalator she was so pretty!! And waving and all...her whole clan came down with her and still more after her. This was a big thing!! Anyways, I yelled her name and she did smile and wave at me!! I almost fainted!! then she walked right on front of me and I thought she looked at me again, but I decided I was delusional (spelling?), but some Sony guy said I looked like Allison (can that be good, he said she was pretty just messed up I guess if she is mariah's sis she has to be?) and thats why she looked at me again. He said she looked more then 2x, but I think he was trying to make me smile as I shook!!

Anyways I got up there so quick after waiting for the moment for what seemed like ages!! She said Hi Honey and I just said Hi (i could hardly speak I was mezmerized!) and then she signed my Aussie Tour book and I said Thank You as she handed it to me and she was like Yourwelcome and it was like a pronloned yourwelcome, it was so sweet. She smiled all big and wasssss soooo nice!!! So then my friend got hers and up the escaltor we went snapping pics!! I got one good pic, cuz Henry pushed me up front at one point to get it. I have good ones of her coming and i know. I have to waste the last like 3 pics and get them developed. I hope to get to scan them up soon, but I have to work all weekend (not that I mind, cuz my job rulz!!!).

Friday, 20th of November 1998 - Baby names
"Mariah" was the 62d most popular name for newborn girls in USA last year. Other singer names are "Whitney" at #104, "Amy" at #105, "Faith" at #107, "Brandy" at #180, "Alanis" at #360 and "Janet" at #510.
Friday, 20th of November 1998 - Mariah's 20/20 got good ratings!
I just found the ratings for Mariah's 20/20 show. The ratings were 11.0/19 which means that 11 million households out of those 60 million households watching TV that night was watching Mariah. Not bad!! 11 million households should mean that like 20-30 million saw the interview?

Here is what website Ultimate TV wrote about that night:
Barbara Walters interview with singer Mariah Carey on "20/20" helped ABC to its fifth Friday night (November 13) win in a row. In the 44 overnight metered markets ABC averaged a 9.2 rating/16 share (10.1/17 last week). NBC had an 8.1/14 (7.2/12) to come in second and CBS had a 7.3/12 (7.1/12) to place third. FOX was fourth with a 5.1/9 (5.3/9) and UPN was a distant fifth with a 2.4/4 (2.8/5).

At 9:30, "Brother's Keeper" dropped to a 7.7/13 (8.5/14). ABC was back on top in the 10-11 hour as "20/20" Friday generated an 11.0/19.

Here you can also see that UPN, the network that will show the Mariah special is the smallest of them all with a big margin.

Friday, 20th of November 1998 - Whitney TV
Mariah has had MTV Mariah TV and today Whitney had MTV Whitney TV. The Mariah related parts were when coming down the hallway to the studio audience at the top of "Whitney TV", she passed by a wall of enlarged new album covers, and waved to and smiled at the one for Mariah's #1's.
Friday, 20th of November 1998 - The fabulous WYB video!
I saw it today, it's one of my favourite videos!!! The best part is in the end when those bright lights turns on, that just blows me away everytime! Mariah lookes more than stunning in this video.
Friday, 20th of November 1998 - Bad news for WYB?
From my favourite radiosite www.fmqb.com. On top 40, When You Believe is up from 2516 to 3146 plays, which is only a small gain of 630 plays. It's the #7 top gainer this week and it's up from #38 to #34 on the chart. It's the second week on the chart. Note though that this chart is slightly rock-related, the top 6 songs are all rock (Alanis, Sheryl Crow, etc.) Airplay needs to be three times as much if it's gonna be #1 on this chart. On street beat it's only up 24 plays to 620 so urban radio is not feeling this song at the moment.
Thursday, 19th of November 1998 - Another sales report.
Well, if you've already read the report below you'll be sad reading this report from Billboard. They don't even mention Mariah.
==============================
Numbers Strong For Garth, Method Man

Sales results from Super Tuesday's slate of high-profile U.S. releases are still coming in, but early returns suggest that Garth Brooks and Method Man will emerge the big winners. Pat Quigley, president of Capitol Nashville, tells Billboard Bulletin that the first-day numbers bolster confidence that Brooks' "Double Live" will end up "plus or minus 10% of our goal." That goal, he says, was to sell 1 million units the first week, not the first day, which had been widely reported. Sources from five national music retail chains put first-day numbers for Brooks at about 52,000, but he is expected to fetch the bulk of his sales from mass merchants, where opening-day figures were sketchy at deadline.

While the Hat Man will carry the mass merchants, Method Man should be the top gun among music retailers. At a sample of six chains, the Wu-Tang Clan rapper's "Tical 2000: Judgement Day" (Def Jam/Mercury) has opening-day sales exceeding 120,000 copies, which, according to Billboard's projections, could put him in the 500,000 range for the week. Of the other big releases that hit stores Tuesday, Jewel's "Spirit" (Atlantic) and the Offspring's "Americana" (Columbia) are in line for the third- and fourth-highest debuts, with first-week sales projected at about 250,000 and 200,000, respectively.
Thursday, 19th of November 1998 - Mariah was #3 in sales?
I'm not sure how they can know already, but they discuss first week sales in an article from Yahoo. Garth Brooks was trying to break the record for ONE days sale by selling 1 million copies, but he ended up at 500.000. #2 best selling on Tuesday was Method Man, which was expected since rap album always sell alot fast. #3 best selling was Mariah with 65.000!!! I don't know if 65.000 is good though, seems kinda low - but they write she outsold Diva-friend Whitney by 2 to 1 so that's not bad. But note that they write #3 of the debuting albums, they don't say anything about the older Alanis and Celine albums. Here is the entire article:
============================
HOLLYWOOD (Variety) - The clear winner on the music industry's so-called ``Super Tuesday'' was Garth Brooks, whose ``Double Live'' disc topped 500,000 units in first-day sales -- the industry's best one-day tally.

The 25-track, two-CD set on Capitol Nashville is expected to top 1 million units for its first week, which would be another record. Results of the week, for the period ending Nov. 22, will be announced Wednesday.

Though the Tuesday tally fell short of Wal-Mart executives' publicly stated hopes to move 1 million units the first day, the numbers are impressive. At the very least, Brooks is shooting to best the 897,000-copy tally logged a year ago by his ``Sevens'' disc, and ``Double Live'' is on track to top Pearl Jam's ``Vs,'' which owns the industry's best-selling first-week tally at 953,000 copies.

``We had an incredible first day, and we are off to a great start,'' EMI Recorded Music president Roy Lott told Daily Variety. ``And all signs point to a record-breaking first week.''

However, Brooks is being challenged by Method Man. According to many retailers surveyed, the rapper ranked first in sales in music specialty stores, with a first-day tally topping 100,000 copies, while Brooks often led the mass merchants, such as Wal-Mart, Best Buy and Kmart.

Brooks' tally should have been helped by his closed-circuit concert to 2,300 Wal-Marts Tuesday night, so fans would flock in and buy the ``Double Live'' set, a selection of Brooks' best-knowns as performed on tour between 1991 and the present.

But the stores were far from crowded, with many reporting merely a handful of fans stopping by. Sales are expected to remain brisk, and industry insiders note that shoppers who haven't already nabbed the disc will likely head to the mall or local record store this weekend. Brooks also played a trio of live shows telecast on NBC Wednesday night (one for each Eastern, Central and Pacific time zones).

Many retailers, such as Tower Records' Sacramento store sold out of its Brooks inventory early in the day, a scenario that was repeated across the Midwest and other country music strongholds.

``Super Tuesday'' earned the moniker because albums from Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Jewel, Seal and the three soundtracks to the upcoming DreamWorks picture ``Prince of Egypt,'' among others, were released.

Carey's ``#1's,'' according to retailers surveyed, was the third-bestselling debut and will likely nab a Top 10 bow on next week's chart. But the diva's first-day numbers for the Columbia Records disc paled in comparison to Brooks' tally, and unofficially checked in at less than 65,000 units.

Carey easily topped Houston -- the pair duet on ``When You Believe,'' which is on both singers' discs and is the first single off the ``Prince of Egypt'' soundtrack -- by almost 2-to-1 in some retailers.

But insiders note that the lion's share of the adult audience, which both discs are targeting, has yet to snap up the album. Those consumers typically take several weeks to embrace an new album, so the discs are likely to have legs as holiday season gifts. The film opens Dec. 18.

Thursday, 19th of November 1998 - Sony Australia has high hopes.
Chris writes me this:
=======================
While looking at the Sony Australia site, I noticed what may be good news for Mariah

"#1's is the ultimate Mariah Carey collection. A massive marketing campaign, including national tv advertising, will guarantee #1's will be one of this Christmas' biggest albums."

So it looks like #1's will have a lot of advertising down here therefore giving it good sales.
=======================

That would be very good work of them if that'll happen, Mariah hasn't really been doing good at all in Australia lately.

Thursday, 19th of November 1998 - WYB single out next week!
Bruno got a mail from Sony Germany and they say the new single will be out November 24. I excpect a similar date for most European countries, and Australia too. For US fans - there's no single planned as of now. Some US chart info though - the song was up on Hot AC airplay to #10 this week.
Thursday, 19th of November 1998 - Voice from the past.
This was pretty fun, a NASCAR Racer. (It's an american car race tournament) had an interview and he mentions Mariah alot. This surely is a rare voice from the past!
===============================
NASCAR WCUP: Steve Park Remembers Giving Rides to Skinny Girl Named Mariah Carey

19 November 1998

#1 Pennzoil Monte Carlo driver Steve Park is a 1985 graduate of Northport High School on Long Island, N.Y. and, like most people, he has many stories about hanging out after school, riding around in his '71 Chevrolet Cheyenne truck driving friends to burger and pizza joints. But almost 15 years later, Park's high school stories take on a new twist considering the success of one of his running mates Mariah Carey - the biggest selling female singer in the 1990s.

Neither Park or Carey probably knew that racing or singing, seemingly trivial pursuits to their friends, would someday turn into lucrative careers. Park is now a rising star in NASCAR Winston Cup racing with Dale Earnhardt Inc. while Carey's recently released album Butterfly promises to add to the 80 million albums she has sold since 1990. Those high school acquaintances now share in fame, fortune, Internet sites, souvenirs and fan clubs. A long way from the days of sharing rides home on Long Island.

Here is the story in Park's words:

"I went to Northport High School on Long Island but I dated a girl at Harborfields High School in Greenlawn about a ten-minute drive away. This had to be about 1984. I had a drivers license and a truck so about three days a week I'd drive over to Harborfields after school to pickup my girlfriend and give her and her friends a ride home. Sometimes we'd go driving around or go get something to eat. One of her friends was this skinny girl named Mariah. My girlfriend and Mariah lived about two or three blocks from each other in Centerport. What I remember most about Mariah is that her mom was real strict and there would be times we would try to get Mariah to go out with us but she couldn't because she had to take singing lessons. Heck, I remember feeling sorry for her. But, she seemed like a really nice girl, kind of quiet, but really nice.

"I could kind of relate to her because I was in the same position. I missed a lot of time hanging out with my friends because of racing. It was hard for people to understand why I did what I did just as I remember thinking why in the world would that girl spend so much time on something as silly as singing lessons. After my girlfriend and I went our separate ways, we still remained really good friends. I remember one day a few years later when I had moved to Connecticut and my former girlfriend called to say, "you won't believe this but there is a radio station up here playing a song by Mariah." That was really cool. I had lost track of Mariah after I moved off the Island, but I remember that was the first person that I had ever known that was singing on the radio. I guess everyone knows the rest of Mariah's story.

"It seems like those silly singing lessons that I laughed at in high school really paid off. But, like I said, I can relate. I think all the time I spent working on cars and at the race track paid off for me. Her mom got her involved in singing and my Dad got me involved in racing. I'm sure my bank account isn't quite like Mariah's is right now, but whose is? Both of us have managed to get where we really wanted to go and I doubt she ever thought I would amount to much and I sure never expected her to be about the best singer in the world. She'd probably laugh if you told her that the guy that gave her rides in high school turned out to be a NASCAR driver. I haven't spoken to her and I don't even know if she remembers me. But, I remember her. It's funny how things work out. I guess it really is a small world."
===========================

What's that Mariah always says "Don't give up on your dream, make it happen."

Thursday, 19th of November 1998 - Cameos for Mariah?
This is from todays issue of US Today Magazine:
=========================
Mariah Carey looks to leap into film

Mariah Carey is looking to do a movie cameo appearance to jump-start her acting career. The multiplatinum singer has been attached to a number of films in recent years, including a large role in Universal's 00-Soul with Chris Tucker, but she has yet to make her feature acting debut. She's still expected to do 00-Soul, once slated to begin shooting in July, but the comedy is stalled awaiting script revisions. Carey is mulling a number of small-role possibilities, her rep confirms. The front-runner: New Line Cinema's The Bachelor, which stars Chris O'Donnell and Renee Zellweger. If a deal can be completed, Carey would play a prospective bride-to-be to O'Donnell's proudly single character, who must wed by a deadline to earn a hefty inheritance.
=====================

So 00 Soul is still awaiting script revisions? That's no good! I hops she'll be in that other movie with Renee because I love her. Anyway, Eric tells me that Entertainment Weekly had a similar story yesterday.

Thursday, 19th of November 1998 - Endless Love

To the nicest and
most talented person.
Thursday, 19th of November 1998 - I don't know...
And neither do you!

I've heard Mariah say that alot lately, where's that from? Jerky boys again? I listened to a tape with them and must say they're so rude those guys!!!

Thursday, 19th of November 1998 - Sweetheart success in Germany!
Believe it or not, but in Germany Sweetheart is Sony's second more successful single right now. This week it went up from #29 to #15 on the charts, and that's very high for Mariah in Germany, and unseen for JD. I just got the 4 track single today and it's da bomb, great mixes! More good news for Sweetheart, on the MTV Europe R&B chart it's at #2 last week. And in Finland or all places, on the Urban DJ "prime cuts" charts it's #1 for the second week in a row! And you can and should vote for the single on the Hit or Miss.

Thursday, 19th of November 1998 - US sales this week.
These are the top 10 sold albums this week, Mariah will be on the chart next week:

1. Alanis - 268.000
2. R Kelly - 216.000
3. Celine Dion - 162.000
4. Jay Z - 161.000
5. U2 - 136.000
6. N Sync (album) - 130.000
7. N Sync (Christmas album) - 118.000
8. Shania Twain - 105.000
9. Dru Hill - 90.000
10. Backstreet Boys - 89.000

Seems like I forgot Jay Z and Celine in my prediction below. They're all pretty big threats to Mariah, so she better sell a bit over 200.000 to beat them! Shania Twain is pretty impressing, Butterfly was fighting with this album in the top 10 a year ago and it's still on there! Here is how the chart looked exactly a year ago:

1. Higher Ground - Barbara Streisand *207.000*
2. Come On Over - Shania Twain *169.500*
3. Unpredictable - Mystikal *156.500*
4. Levert Sweat Gill - LSG *138.000*
5. Harlem World - Mase *134.000*
6. You Light Up My Life - LeAnn Rimes *126.000*
7. Tubthumper - Chumbavamba *104,000*
8. Spiceworld - Spice Girls *101.000*
9. Butterfly - Mariah Carey *90.000*
10. Yourself or Someone Like You - Matchbox 20 *76.000*

Mariah had then been on the chart for 9 weeks and Shania 2 weeks.

Mariah Carey's Cookin' On MTV

MTV Airs "Mariah's No. 1's" On Sunday, Nov. 22nd at 2:00PM (ET/PT)

"I Don't Wanna Cry" Video To Premiere

NEW YORK--(ENTERTAINMENT WIRE)--Nov. 18, 1998--Hang out with Mariah Carey and friends as MTV celebrates the release of her new album, Mariah Carey's No. 1's, a compilation of her No. 1 hits.

Mariah, who calls herself the ``modern day Julia Childs,'' cooks up chicken tacos and pasta for her friends, back-up singers and dancers, while she counts down her No. 1 music videos, including ``Honey'' and ``Fantasy'' (the never-before-seen version featuring Wu Tang Clan's ODB). In addition, Mariah premieres for the first time her new video for ``I Don't Wanna Cry.'' Mariah will also relive some of her No. 1 moments on MTV, including her appearance with Whitney Houston at the ``1998 MTV Video Music Awards'' and ``Mariah's Spring Break Luau.'' ``Mariah's No. 1's'' airs on MTV on Sunday, Nov. 22nd at 2:00PM (ET/PT).
==============

I think I've heard Mariah complain about her I Don't Wanna Cry video, which is strange because it's one of the most emotional and beautiful videos in history, but I didn't know about this new video for I Don't Wanna Cry, I wonder what it'll be like!! So don't miss this show y'all! And what's with that never-before-seen Fantasy video? I've sure seen Mariah and ODB in Fantasy.

Wednesday, 18th of November 1998 - Mariah around the World concert!
Rod read in LA Times today that Mariah's new concert special will be broadcasted on UPN at December 15. It's called "Mariah Carey Around The World" and I think it'll have clips from her Butterfly tour and also her new live recordings of Whenever You Call with Brian McKnight, I Still Believe. For those of you who don't know about UPN, it's one of the smallest TV-networks in USA. Their biggest shows are Brandys show Moesha and I think Star Trek. I still wish that it would have been NBC instead, but hopefully UPN will give this special lots and lots of promotion.
Wednesday, 18th of November 1998 - Mariah's #1's challenge!
The big releases of CD's in USA this week are listed below. I believe that some of them will beat Mariah's #1's album in sales, I'll write the ranking I think will happen below too.

Garth Brooks - Will undeniably debut at #1 because of his marceting strategy and selling of a double CD for single CD price. Should sell about 700.000-800.000 I think.

Method Man - a member of Wu Tang and his new album should sell very good. Rap album always sell at its best the first week and then normally fall fast, with a few exceptions like Ma$e, Puffy and Jay Z. Should sell over 200.000 I think.

Ice Cube - I'm not sure about his popularity, I think he will sell a bit over 100.000

Jewel - This singer is very popular, y'all know that. At least in USA, so I predict this album to sell about 150.000-200.000 copies at least.

Alanis - She's #1 for the second week in a row in USA this week. Sales went down from the recordbreaking 470.000 to 270.000, but that's still very high. The CD should sell about 200.000 copies.

R Kelly - debuted #2 in USA this week with sales of 215.000 copies. He'll be lucky if he sells 150.000 next week.

Whitney Houston - I'm not sure about this album! I've heard reports about not so good promotion, also I'm not sure how big the anticipation is for this album. But it is her first studioalbum in 8 years and it should create alot of attention because of the WYB song hopefully. I think it'll sell about 200.000-300.000 copies.

Mariah Carey - This is so hard!!!!! I want it to sell amazingly much but I'm just not sure it will because it got mostly old songs! But fingers crossed for Mariah and I would be very dissapointed if it sold less than 150.000!

The chart as I predict will look like:
1. Garth Brooks
2. Method Man
3. Whitney
4. Alanis
5. Jewel
6. Mariah
7. R Kelly
8. Ice Cube

Wednesday, 18th of November 1998 - Whitney speaks about Mariah.
It isn't every day you get the two premier pop divas of the '90s together to perform a duet for a movie soundtrack.

So when word came that Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston were to record a song together for the upcoming DreamWorks picture "The Prince of Egypt," it was rumored that there was an ongoing "Celebrity Death Match" between the two.

Now the duet is a track on Houston's first studio album in eight years, "My Love Is Your Love," and Houston is pleased for the opportunity to squelch the diva-cat fights rumor. "We came to sing; we didn't come to fight," she says, denying any rivalry between her and Carey.

"I'm not going to say people are mean," she says, "even though I know there are mean people. But I do think that people expect that two vocalists of such great caliber would have nothing else to do but fight. You know, (as if) that's what we looked forward to, coming in and fighting each other. No, we looked forward to working with each other."

Wednesday, 18th of November 1998 - WYB video in Europe!
MTV has a short story about Mariah, visit their site which has RealVideo by clicking here.

The story says:
In celebration of the release of her new album "#1's," Mariah Carey stopped by MTV's Times Square Studio as part of the "Mariah TV" program earlier this week, and later threw a party on Tuesday night for a select number of fans -- 1,111 of them to be exact.

In attendance were those who had won radio-sponsored contests from across the country, with the winners being invited to New York City's Webster Hall to party with Mariah and DJ Funkmaster Flex.

Spokespeople for Mariah said that the singer wanted to thank the fans that helped make all the number one hits the appear on the new album. But Carey is still insisting that the new collection is not a "Greatest Hits" record, and explained to MTV why.

"It's too soon for me to do a 'Greatest Hits,'" Carey said, "I haven't even been out 10 years yet. The only problem is that I've done an album a year since I first came out, which is pretty ridiculous but pretty standard. I've been working non-stop. So it's all the number one songs that I've had, and there's some bonus tracks on there." [28.8 RealVideo]

The aforementioned bonus tracks include her duets with Jermaine Dupri on "Sweetheart," with Whitney Houston on "When You Believe," and with Brian McKnight on "Whenever You Call." Carey's new collection also features yet another new tune, entitled "I Still Believe."

Wednesday, 18th of November 1998 - Hero honours life.
This is from an article in the Philly inquirer.(Edited)
=========================
A time to honor the gift of life
Tom Speck has never met the family members who donated the heart that saved his little girl's life.

But he can't get them out of his mind. "I just want to reach out and say thank you to everyone for having -- in your worst hour -- the strength and gracious heart to want to reach out and help someone else," said Speck, whose 8-year-old Melissa was on the verge of death when she underwent a heart transplant last year.

Grieving audience members quietly wept as Speck choked back tears during a ceremony yesterday honoring the families of organ donors. "We see a donor's smile in my daughter's smile," the Broomall man said.

The ceremony reached its emotional peak at the end, when audience members cried during a five-minute video that projected snapshots of their loved ones on a giant movie screen. It was accompanied by the ballad, "Hero," by pop singer Mariah Carey.

Tuesday, 17th of November 1998 - Another good review of #1's
Detroit Free Press gives it 3 out of 4, here are the interesting parts of the review:
======================
As it exists now, that body of work is loaded with chirpy, mid-tempo pop ("Dreamlover," "Always Be My Baby"), majestic balladry ("I'll Be There") and soft-focus love-ins ("One Sweet Day").

It's all pushed forward by Carey's sweet and limber soprano, a voice she's learned to temper over the years, as she's graced her sound with touches of funky hip-hop.

The chart records are sure to keep growing: Included here are four new tunes, including her earthquaking "When You Believe" duet with Whitney Houston and the booty-bouncing "Sweetheart," featuring what just might be her sexiest, sassiest vocal yet.
