The opening words of the Lutheran Book of Worship include this instruction:"The sign of the cross may be made by all in remembrance of their Baptism."
The LBW Ministers Edition Notes on the Liturgy explain: "Christians
have used the sign of the cross and the words which came to accompany it as
an act of invocation and blessing--a remembrance of their Baptism when they
were washed in the triune name and 'marked with the sign of Christ
forever.' Luther recommends the sign of the cross to begin one's prayers on
arising and retiring. Here the sign and words tie together Baptism and the
confession of sin: 'Repentance, therefore, is nothing else than a
return and approach to Baptism'(LC). The act of worship begins with a
remembrance of how one became part of the community of faith.
The Lutheran Hymnal of the Missouri Synod gives a poetic interpretation
of the sign of the cross. It embodies the story of salvation in the
Northern European ritual tradition similar to that among Christians
following Eastern Orthodox rites:
"The sign of the cross is made by holding the palm of the right hand flat, thumb and fingers together, and by touching with the tips of the fingers the forehead ('My Lord Jesus Christ came down from heaven'), then the breast ('and was inc arnate for me'), the right shoulder ('and was crucified for me'), and finally the left shoulder('and entered into my heart')."
Although the previous and current hymnals of the Church of Sweden
do recommend liturgical use of the sign of the cross, the church books lack
instruction and explanations of the ritual gesture. Therefore it may be
helpful to Christians in Sweden to consider the interpretation in
Oremus, the Swedish Catholic Prayerbook: "It is a reminder of our
Baptism in the Triune God's Name, a confession of the Cross of Christ, a
prayer for His protection and an expression of our willingness to serve
Him with our understanding and feelings, soul and body."
