Squall is a short man at only 17 years of age. He uses a special weapon known as the "Gunblade." Squall tends to keep to himself unless the topic being dealt with is something which interests him, at which time he can get quite lively. He is a loner and has almost no comradship for the people around him. Around his neck Squall wears a necklace which bears a strange griffon-like symbol which can also be seen near the barrel of the Gunblade. Character designer Tetsuya Nomura wanted the character's name to have the meaning of a passing shower, which is how he came up with the name Squall. The last name, Leonheart, was the name of one of the main characters from an earlier 8-bit fantasy which never made it to the U.S.

Unlike Squall, Laguna is a man of heart. He knows his love and respects his duties. He is an optimistic and vigorous person who enjoys the confidence provided by those around him. Laguna used to be a soldier, but now works as a journalist. Squall and Laguna, while they are both main characters, live on two different worlds and how their paths will cross has not been discovered yet. Laguna's name came from Laguna Beach, California, as well as the powerful sword Ragnarok which when broken down phonetically in Japanise sounds like "la-gu-na-ro-k"

Active and caring, she is a very lively person. Sometimes she's very quite, and there's nothing to complain about her looks. She fights with a weapon called "Blaster Edge" (That's what it sounds like)

He doesn't fight with Squall in the battles, however he is also a student from Garden. Although he's an exellent fighter, he is cold hearted and will do anything for victory. He thinks of Squall as his rival, but no one else. Somehow I can't shake the idea that this guy is going to "pull a Sephiroth" if you know what I mean. He just seems evil.

His grandfather's a soldier, and because of his grandfather he became a student of Garden. He acts on his own without thinking and he's not so good at reasoning. He has like a mood change all the time, but after all he is an honest guy inside. His fighting skills are excellent.
