Coring in Lake Laitaure (Laidaure)

This lake, situated at the eastern border of the Scandinavian mountain range, just north of the Arctic Circle, formerly had a length of 15 km but is nowadays half filled up by the Laitaure delta.

The equipment used for coring in Lake Laitaure and in the Laitaure Delta in 1954.

Radiograph of bottomset beds in the lower part of a 5.9 m long core from the Laitaure delta.

A soil sampler with metal foils was used for the sampling of this core in 1954 but the core was not not X-rayed until 1978, and as shown, the sedimentary sequence has been interrupted by desiccation cracks

Radiographs of the topmost sediment layers in cores from the central part of Lake Laitaure was published by Andrén in 1994 (UNGI Rapport Nr 88), who used the methods described in the manual: "X-ray radiographic techniques in studying sedimentary properties, sedimentary sequences, and rates of sedimentation".

Sediment traps have been used for measuring sedimentation in Lake Laitaure, and a diagram has been constructed, showing calculated amounts of sediment remaining in suspension at the outlet section of Lake Laitaure, or deposited within the lake, in percentage of the amounts discharged into the lake from the deltaic distributaries.
