Lake Helgumsjön

Radiograph of sediment core 494.

Helgumsjön is a narrow, 12 km long lake, traversed by the river Faxälven. Three of the X-rayed sediment cores were sampled in the upper (northern) part of this lake in 1979-04-04.

Radiograph of the upper part of core 494, sampled from a depth of 24 m and about 2 km in front of the delta of the river Faxälven in Lake Helgumsjön. The curve showing the downcore variation in dry bulk density is based on film-density values recorded along the centerline of the radiograph.

For the core depth 0 - 10 cm the mean value of the wet and dry bulk density amounted to 1.47 and 0.744 respectively, the mean value of the porosity and the water content to 72 % and 50.9 % (of the wet weight) respectively, and the mean value of the organic content to 3.6 % (determined as the loss on ignition).
