Lake Mien

Mien is a round lake in southern Sweden (southern Småland) with an area of about 20 km2. Sex sediment cores (nos. 588 - 593) were sampled on the same day (1980-03-31) in this lake. Two of the (23) radiographs of these cores are shown below. The coring sites, see the map further down, were situated at water depths between 15 and 32 m.

Radiographic comparison between the upper part of cores 588 and 593 sampled at water depths of 15 and 23 m in the southern and the northern part of Lake Mien respectively.

The water content was high in the uppermost part of these two cores. For the core depth 0 - 5 cm the mean value of the water content amounted to 95 % of the wet weight.

Vertical variation in content of solids in the upper part of core 593. (The curve is based on film-density measurements by a Theimer DDM3 transmission densitometer).

As shown by the radiographs and exemplified by the curve above a comparatively hard layer was found at a core depth of about 9 cm in cores 588 and 593.

The organic content was high in all of the sex cores. In core 593 the mean value of the loss on ignition amounted to 25% of the dry weight for the core depth 0 - 40 cm.

Locations of the sex X-rayed sediment cores (588 - 593) from lake Mien.
